The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

No, witty answers are lots of fun, I wish I was better at thinking them up myself.

So there is no difference, eh? This is an educational thread ;-)

I was getting the so called "free range" eggs, since I felt sorry for the chickens, only sometimes those ones seem to be pretty old, not fast enough turnover in the store, I guess.

So, I was going to go back to the regular eggs, only they give you a color choice.

Do you guys remember when that really dangerous bacteria (sounded like "fisteria" or maybe "wisteria") was in the tidal waters of Virginia and North Carolina. There was a theory that it was somehow associated with chicken farming.

Never knew how that all came out.

I think it's spelled pfisteria. It was a few years ago.

I see that Corin has already found the answer, but I had always assumed it was due to the type of chicken and their genetic predisposition. Sort of like if the hens were once wild, their eggs would more than likely be brown since the need to hide them was imperative. Whereas a purely domesticated hen would produce white eggs for the opposite reason - no predators to hide from. :)

I've always preferred white eggs myself. For some reason, the brown ones look "dirty" to me. Weird.

There was a theory that it was somehow associated with chicken farming.

I don't know that they were able to prove the link to chickens (were they OT?). But the concern was that the runoff from chicken "litter" (aka poop) was adding nutrients into the water and feeding this disease. The states in the Bay region have addressed the disposal of the "litter." It can be used for fuel, fertilizer, etc.

Problems result when rainwaters wash excess nutrients into the waters, feeding algae, etc. and taking oxygen from the water.

Ugh! Sounds nasty!

I'd have to taste it though to make a final judgement. I'm quite partial to gravy (my hips attest to that), but this sounds a bit strange.

OK, so Entmoot will entail a lembas cook off, a cloak making contest and a red-eye gravy sampling. *smile*

See? It was a racist question after all...

You put gravy on your hips?

I think it's related to the run off of "nutrients" into estuaries.

LOL!

If the egg's not white, I won't take a bite
If the egg is brown, I'm outta town!

Not nasssty, silly hobbit! It's just a thin gravy (I don't know why they call it a "gravy") that tastes like country ham.

"yes, conservatives should pay attention to this kind of stuff"

Yeah, I agree. Making sure we retain an unpolluted and beautiful environment should be a real concern, not what it is now: a wegdge to ram socialism down everyone's throat.

Yup, I rub in some turkey gravy every night, just before bed.

I used to use sausage gravy, but found the chunks of meat were very uncomfortable to sleep on.

The sausage gravy was a better exfoliant though...

So it's more like a light sauce than a gravy. I see!

Anything that tastes like country ham is OK in my book.

OT - I think I'm falling into your habit of saying things that don't sound right to certain individuals in here! *grin*

Conservation should be a heart-felt matter, not legislated.

It's naive to think they will be, but business should be ecologically-minded because it's the right thing to do, not because they're forced to.

I like that word "conservation," goes better w/ "conservative," after all, that's what we are doing, conserving.

I grew up in a very rural area, loved the outdoors as a kid, still do. It drives me really crazy to have a bunch of leftist city folk (the "environmentalists") trying to tell me about nature and trying to regulate it. The dummies got their ideas about it from watching Walt Disney, which means they don't know a damn thing. 'Course their agenda lies elsewhere anyway

"It's naive to think they will be, but business should be ecologically-minded because it's the right thing to do, not because they're forced to."

I think so too, corporate America could show a little more leadership than they do. Instead, you find them funding various leftist causes in hopes, I guess, of appeasement. Reminiscent of the Republican congressmen.
