The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'm smiling. All I did was make an observation.

RBA has never seen the Wizard-kabob, obviously. He's probably confused and had no idea it would take so long to download the image.

I wonder if we could replace Saruman's head with Osama's? The robes are just right, doncha know! *laughing wickedly*

Nobody is touching the breakfast I made. *sniff*

I guess I'll figure out how to incorporate some of the stuff into lunch.

had no idea it would take so long to download the image.

And again, all I did was point that out.

I didn't see anything wrong with what you said at all.

Now, have many strips of bacon would you like?

If you scale a picture down just by using commands (image height, for example), it looks smaller on the screen, but doesn't change the actual image size, as in kb. So it took awhile for those on slower connections. But no big deal. We've already talked past that page anyway!

Good morning everyone!

My parents just took my brother to the airport, and I'm alone in this big house with this computer. It still seems pretty slow to me, because it's on a mac. I asked my brother why and he gave me all these reasons but it still seems to me it's because the thing is a mac.

I'm going with my mom to get the training to give her a "twice-a-week" arthritis injection...Enbrel? Anyway, that's this afternoon.

Most of the local diners will serve breakfast all day, if you want it. All this talk of sausages and bacon and biscuits is making me think I need to pay a visit to the Miss Lyndonville Diner...

Thanks, Rosie. That's all I was trying to say (but not doing it very well). The image was still pulled from theonering.net's server, which causes the slowdown for some.

I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I guess that is Saruman, but the robes don't exactly look like the ones worn by Christopher Lee, I don't think, don't see the patterned belt that he usually has. Or maybe that is just the picture. Not sure about the shoes. I suppose the blood will be added digitally. Probably he fell out of one of those helicopters that Sean worried about so.

The breakfast looks pretty good, Ruthy, I may have to get some.

Well, I did prepare two plates, so you can have one of them. BUT, you can only have 2 or 3 T-bones in order for there to be enough for everyone else!

Anything else, sir? There's eggs and hash browns and bisuits and sausage gravy as well.

I just have to shake my head that a gov employee gets paid to pass along spam-o-grams....and they call him a safety officer! Ha!

I can do you one better. Years ago, when I was contracting at Michigan Bell, they had two "computer security officers" who were retired police officers. They knew nothing about computers, and spent the day drinking coffee and reading the newspapers. But they had concealed weapons permits, and were the only employees allowed to be armed. Their real function was to accompany top executives when they went somewhere, to give them a feeling of protection and power. In Detroit, the real bigshots of the really big corporations all have armed "executive assistants" as a status symbol.

One day, one of the guys on our team discovered an 11-year-old hacker living in a Bell unix system. He had gotten all the passwords by dumpster diving, and was having a grand ol' time. So our manager passed that information on to the "computer security officers". About an hour later, she got a nastygram from a big VP about how this had upset the "computer security officers", because they didn't know anything about computers, and didn't appreciate being bothered. We were told to ignore the hacker, and not breathe a word of it to anyone else.

So we quietly kicked the kid off, changed the locks, and made a note to never report another security breach.

For all I know, those two guys probably got a pension from Bell, too, and are now triple-dipping as "security experts" at the airport.
