The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Wolverton Mountain was just about the same time as Running Bear and his blighted White Dove, and Locomotion, the early 60's.

Quite the procession, no? Heh...maybe the cat will get in shape?

One of my cats could do with a daily walk around the pasture. Tam, on the other hand, has always been so thin it sometimes worries me. That might have something to do with the fact that he chases all the rest of the animals around the house all the time. When one gets fed up and smacks him, he starts picking on another. Back when he was an "only cat", we used to chase one another. And he'd still stay up half the night crying 'cause he wanted to play. At least now we divide up Tam entertaining duties!

I've heard Running Bear, and I can kinda remember the story...but not well enough to unstick Wolverton Mountain.

But at least Locomotion is gone. Trying not to think of that word...

Very good about TTT! I will probably make a midnight run to the local WalMart, again.

When is the release date for TTT, again?

Oooh...berries! I hadn't thought of that! I'll bet this week there will be fresh berries at the market. I haven't gone for a few weeks.

Ah, don't worry about it... I just remembered hearing Hank Williams' "Wedding Bells" on the radio a couple of hours ago, so now I've got that playing in my head. Much more pleasant.

Will this help you remember it well enough to get "Running Bear" unstuck?

Wolverton Mountain
Merle Kilgore and Claude King, 1962

They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain,
if you're looking for a wife.
'Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty
young daughter,
he's mighty handy with a gun and a knife.

Her tender lips are sweeter than honey
And Wolverton Mountain protects her there.
The bears and birds tell Clifton Clowers
If a stranger should wander there.

All of my dreams are on Wolverton Mountain.
I want his daughter for my wife.
I'll take my chances and climb that mountain
Though Clilfton Clowers, he may take my life

Her tender lips ....

I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain,
It's too lonely downhere below.
It's just not right to hide his dayghter
From the one who loves her so.

Her tender lips ...

But I don't care about Clifton Clowers,
I'm gonna climb up on his mountain,
I'm gonna take the girl I love.
I don't care about Clifton Clowers,
I'm gonna climb up on his mountain,
I'm gonna take the girl I love.

(repeat to fade)

Of course, then you have to try to get rid of Wolverton Mountain, but...

Apparently, you can listen to a little of Running Bear right here. If you're a masochist. :^)
