The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You want that fake poly-styrene snow in summer Rosie?

Would think that would kinda wreck the effect!

Good morning!

No...summer should be summer and winter should be winter...but it still amazes me that it can be sooo sunny and yet sooo cold! I like it better when it's about twenty degrees warmer than it is today.

But it's nice from the window!

I'm just dying. These cost about $35 pretty much every where I check.

Doesn't that seem a bit steep for a pair of canvas sneakers???

Here's the latest on my home PC crisis!

Ever since I switched from XP to 2000 Pro, I haven't been able to use my drivers properly (CD-RW and DVD Rom). The restore drivers CD that came with my computer has only ghost files, so you can't select the software only without re-installing XP! ARRRGGHH!

I had to go out and purchase Roxio Easy CD Creator so my CD-RW would work. It does, finally! SO now I can play music and save stuff to CDs.

On my search for PowerDVD or WinDVD 4.0, I met up with a really nice gentleman who works at Office Depot and he said he had several copies of PowerDVD that they had been ready to discard. Long story short, he gave me a PowerDVD CD with the CD Key for installation. The problem? It's not accepting it.

I think it's one digit short and he isn't working today, so what do I do? Is there a way to install PowerDVD without the key?

I like it here so far! I'm wanting to play my new whistles, though!

I did sleep in a bit this morning! Didn't let Bay out until 7:00!

Today is gonna be a busy one... I have to leave mid-morning and go hold horses for a friend while is farrier comes. He just had hernia surgery this week, and isn't supposed to lift anything for some weeks. If the horse jerks wrong, I think his stitches could just rip out and his guts would end up on the stable floor! (I was giving him a hard time on that vein, convincing him that he needed my help!)

But then I have to be home by this afternoon for Mr. Dell Man and the long-awaited video card!

Dunno....I haven't priced canvas sneakers lately. Leather ones are more expensive.

I don't know anything about PowerDVD - sorry!

I HATE those restore CDs that don't let you pick and choose! That's one reason (one of many) why I won't ever own a Compaq again.

You're getting a video card, dude. Is he taking the monitor back?

My sister said the same thing about the stupid restore CD. I bought an eMachine and it has the same nonsense Compaq does.

I love the machine, it's just the XP-forced-down-your-throat I can't stand!

No.... I get to keep the new monitor. I have to ship my other perfectly good monitor back to them.

Mr. Dell can't take the old one and ship it for you?

I think his job is just the video card. He will take the bad video card and ship that back.

They sent me a pre-paid Airborne Express label, I have to call AE and have them come and pick it up.

Shoulda bought a Dell. ;-) Of course, then you might be going through what Hair is going through...

I actually like XP so far, though maybe I've been lucky. No big issues with my home system, except for occasional flakiness if I don't reboot once in a while. (I tend to leave it up and running rather than shutting down all the time.)

Not a bad deal, then, except for the wait. New card, and a bigger monitor!

I really have trouble with this on the PC's in my classroom. So much so that I encourage students not to try to use CD's. I'm having a lot of trouble getting CD's to burn consistently no matter what we use.

The only reason I gave up on the XP it because it wouldn't let me access Windows Update, launch IE or MSN Explorer or even retrieve my Hotmail.

In hindsight, it was probably because the security settings were too high, but the switch has been made and I have invested too much time and effort on 2000 Pro to bother going back to square one. It's a matter of pride now. ;)
