The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi Hair.

Thought I'd drop by and ask your experts a couple of questions:

Any definitive word on when TTT:Extended will be released? I hope it is long enough prior to ROTK to wear it out :-)

We got the Argonath with FOTR ... any idea what gifts will be in this one?

Finally, I want to purchase a high-quality, large-size LOTR book (or book set). It can be one book or separate volumes, but I want it to have the most and best maps and artwork, and I think that would mean it would be large (about 8" x 10" or more). I have perused Amazon but can't decide between several editions. I'm sure the Hobbit Hole regulars have experience and recommendations they can help me with.

Thanks for this thread and the spoilers one ... we sure could use some clips and trailers, ya know?

Hi! The Extended Edition is slated for release Nov. 18. The gift is a statue of Gollum.

As to the best edition of the book, I'm not sure, so I'll let others answer that.

Good Evening All. The cart is unhitched and ponies are munching oats. A grand time was had by all. Good food and good company. The shower thingy was well attended and according to LSA the food was delicious. The bride to be is Rehab, nephew is Artist.

Whilst Rehab was getting showered with house plunder. The menfolk were eating hot mustard buffalo wings and appropriate liquid refreshment prior to attending a Cardinals baseball game. Cards beat Pittsburgh, well played game, thankfully we had second tier seats so could be in the shade. Last time I saw the Cards play was in 1966 or 67. St. Louis is lobbying hard for new stadium. I still call that one the new stadium. Couldn't find my old StL red cap, hmm. wonder where I put it.

Rehab (27) and Artist (30) are a wonderful couple, not that we are biased or anything.:-)

Brother in law, nephews are still shooting traditional recurves, wood shafts. Shakespeare, Browning and Bear, newest was made about 1972.

Well, couple responses are in order:

g'nad, that's a good looking shed/coop, adaptive reuse of indigineous materials is an admirable trait, one that more should emulate. :-)

Hair; hope guest dog is feeling better.

2JM; well, sorta good news on the eye, hope the two weeks pass quickly.

Wn; well it hit 106.7 locally, probably less "officially" looks like we're catching up with you. Oh, boy, I get to work drainage on the Kansas Turnpike next week. Hmm, why can't we do it in the fall?

OT: "institutional white and off-white" sound, well, 'neutral' to say the least. (there is Guiness in the fridge)

300WM; the folding stock version would work as well. Do they make 'aimpoint' sights for a 12g.

Furry Friends report; Samantha is at the 'Pet Palace' till tommorrow, Annie and Louise are fine, Annie was happy to see us, Louise as well (I think).

hmmm, Discs 3 and 4 seem to be pretty much the same as FOTR. I will hold out hope that is because they have not finished production yet, and don't know exactly what they will put there.

Hmmm...

Well,

I bought the leather(ette)-bound editions of the Hobbit and LOTR.

The LOTR edition has a large fold-out map in the back, it's nice but very basic. The Hobbit has beautiful color plates for illustrations. Definately keepsakes-they look gorgeous on the bookshelf. And they smell like proper books should. But, I also have paperbacks for the heavy duty reading, dog-earing, note-taking and such.

Your best bet for the best maps will be Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-Earth. In it are the maps from the entire history of Middle-earth, much of it drawn from the Silmarillion and other texts. She's quite a talent and has a singular style.

Glad your weekend went well.

I finished touching up the "Woodlawn Bedroom White" bedroom and the ceiling fan paddles are back on and spinning. Exeterior porch railings are painted. Bossman said to work on house stuff again this week too. Soooo.....what color should I paint the bathroom?

They seem the same because the format and layout is the same, but the content will be the same kind of in-depth about the fabulous locations and events in TTT as opposed to FoTR. There is much 'behind the scenes' stuff that I want to know about creating Edoras, the horses of the Rohirrim, Helm's Deep and the Ents. Same chapters as the layout in FoTR EE, new world to cover. And new things to say (and probably try to explain) about adapting the book to the movie.

DISCS 3-4: The Appendices:

Two discs with hours of original content including multiple documentaries and design/photo galleries with thousands of images to give viewers an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

DISC 3:

Adapting the book into a screenplay & planning the film

Designing and inspiration for locations in Middle-earth

Storyboards to pre-visualization

Weta Workshop visit: See sculptors in action as they create weapons, armor, creatures, and miniatures from the film

Atlas of Middle-earth tracing the journey of the Fellowship

An interactive map of New Zealand highlighting the location scouting process

Galleries of art and slideshows with commentaries by the artists

DISC 4:

Sending the actors into battle: sword fighting

Principal photography: Stories from the set

Digital effects including motion capture and the computer program to create the armies of Orcs

Bigatures: a close-up look at the miniatures

Galleries of behind-the-scenes photographs and personal cast photos

Post-Production: editing it all together

Sound design demonstration

DVD-ROM Content: Includes access to exclusive online features

Widescreen anamorphic format

Number of discs: 4

thanks ... I was looking at that edition, and a non-leatherette version that comes as 3 volumes.

I certainly wouldn't think a quality production like this would merely duplicate the earlier disk. No doubt there is much new ground to cover in the same topics.

Yeah - that is what I am thinkin'.... the first one they went indepth into creating Hobbiton and Bree and Rivendell.... This time we get to see Edoras built out on that hill they found... and the various size minatures and sets that became helm's deep. And I confidently hope for some content on the training of Shadowfax.... And the digital creation of Gollum, and the Ents.

There will be new interesting content from the actors on the characters we know already, and also a chance for the characters new to TTT to talk a bit on their experience. It will be good, I am confident of that.

I think your decision will come down to whether you want a trophy set or a work set. The leatherettes are beautiful (and well worth the money), but too beautiful to wear out.

I expect to be re- and re-reading them periodically. But I don't take notes, or dog-ear pages, or such. The worst that would happen is they get a smudge of popcorn butter.
