The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yeah - well wait until you see a kid you used to babysit in a bar - drinking - legally.

That is sobering. ;~D

Status report on the "knife project":

1. For you folks that wanted one of your own, the order has been placed.

2. I took a sample to HH, and after much discussion, we decided that pantograph engraving would be impossible. First, there is very little usable area on the knife. Second, the knife would have to be clamped to the work surface with the engraving area horizontal. There was no way to do that without building a special jig.

3. I left one knife there for laser engraving, which only requires the surface to be horizontal, but doesn't require any clamping. The URL will be engraved on the flat area just above the cutting edge. It will be ready tomorrow, and I'll post a picture of the results before we make a final decision.

4. I asked how much this one engraving job was cost, and heard a mumbled "seven-and-a-half". That's in the ballpark with Things Remembered (which is still a bit pricey), but TR never saw the knife, and would probably refuse the job.

5. Before I left, I showed the guy our pages at the-hobbit-hole.net. He was impressed with what he saw, along with being extrememly impressed with the knife (obviously a knife neophyte). I told him that if he gives us a break in exchange for putting his logo on the knife (there is room for a small one next to the CRKT logo), his store would get a VERY nice mention in the "certificates" that will accompany these gifts.

6. Here are a couple of photos. The first shows one of the knives compared to my regular pocket knife. You can also see the difference between laser engraving (top knife) vs. electro-etch on the bottom. The other picture shows the gigantic area of engraving on the back of the blade, which prevented us from using that area.

My best friend from my homeschooling days is getting married on Saturday. I'm feeling kinda the same, only different because I'm old enough that seems like most of the people I've known growing up are married. Sigh.

I'll just sigh with you...

One of my friends has been married twice already (but she'll probably not be happy with that either)

I'm still about a year away from having kids I used to babysit reach drinking age, so I guess I can celebrate that. Maybe.

Would you believe this will be the first wedding I've ever been to, though? How did I manage that?

Most people got married after I moved back here, or were married when I met 'em...and my cousins are all younger, except one who had a quickie wedding at 18, and they don't live close by. But still...I feel like an oddball!

Well, it is a little odd I suppose to have never been a kid who had to go the the wedding of some relative or friend of the family!

I was the youngest in the family, so not only did I have to go, I often got tagged as flower girl or candle-lighter!

My Mom was the last of her siblings to marry, and then we moved to VT, and most of the families we've been close to over the years had kids slightly younger than us. Alana (my friend) and I were kind of the oldest of the generation. It's a rural area...I guess that plays into it!

Now if I can just catch the bouquet...

... this is the first sign that I really am old enough to get married myself.

You have plenty of time to get scared Jen.

I am now old enough to be invited to weddings of the children of friends. Which also means I'm old enough to be the father of the bride.

Yeah - well wait until you see a kid you used to babysit in a bar - drinking - legally.

Heh...I was in the grocery store the other night. Read the sign that said 'You must have been born on or before this date in 1985 to purchase tobacco/alcohol products.'

By 1985, I'd been eligible to buy them for 9 years...

That's cool Rick.... I think no matter what happens it will be great. Hopefully.... They will do it cheap.... otherwise, we can send them without engraving, and that will be almost as great! :~D

I agree! Either way, I can't wait to hear what they think of them!

Tonight, I made link sausage and fresh corn with couscous. Joshua said it was the best steak he's ever eaten, actually...a great feast! That was his exact words! LOL "This is great steak...actually, a great feast!"

Funny.

Steve is mowing those two little spots I left behind and I can barely move I'm so stiff from mowing this morning!

ecurbh, I am in way over my html head....

On my profile in the table, I just added a row with the flag and a link to the Chaplain project.

I added a horizontal rule line at the top of the row.... How do I get a line that will go all the way across instead of only across that column? I am so lost in my own table I can't decipher where one row ends and the next begins.
