Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

yeah, when i wore contacts i never upgraded my glasses. they'd work.
LOL Matter of fact, the reason I broke down and got the last ones was that NONE of my old pairs of glasses were without broken parts. I'm getting there again. My regular glasses had a piece of the frame break off. Nothing affecting the wearing of them so they still work.

Morning holers, holiers and hollers.
Hair, you will help me when I am ready to set-up the Flat Frodo pics? Right? And, do you have a recommendation for a hosting site for them? I have a few pics saved on an Ofoto site. Would that work?

I get those forms in the mail every year...even here in OK where the laws are very lax about homeschooling.
I toss 'em. Right along with school newsletter they so thoughtfully send me with the money they get from my property taxes.

Good morning everyone!
Corin is it "Hook"?
Ruthy, sorry about the let down with the interview.

I toss 'em. Right along with school newsletter they so thoughtfully send me with the money they get from my property taxes. Yeah, speaking of the money they get. This school in Wichita Falls didn't even make a pretense about the value they place on student attendance to get funding. Many many days in the school here there were activities going on which precluded a day of normally scheduled classes. On those days attendance was still required of all student so that the school could get their funding. And yet, they piled the students in an auditorium to just congregate with one another. And do nothing.
Now, just what kind of inappropriate activities and conversation can come from 5 hours of pretty much unsupervised time like this? And when confronted with the ethics of this the school just came right out and said, "We need the gubmint money."
I would say this also explains some of my griping and complaining about the quality of students I receive at the college.

Corin is it "Hook"?Trini! I think you're right. I don't watch movies so I don't even try these quizes - but I got that one once for the kids and I remember that.

"We need the gubmint money.""If you ask my opinion, which I note that you're not," ;-) I don't think money has a lot to do with education, especially on that level.
If schools would merely set standards of achievment, and require the students to meet those standards, they could produce educated people in an old shack, with no electricity, and coal stoves for heat. I believe this is how it was done for most of the history of the country, with great success.

This is your final reminder to freepmail me if you're interested in purchasing one of the "Hobbit Hole Special" pocket knives. We're sending two dozen to "our" platoon in Iraq, and if you want one for yourself, you have until Wednesday morning to contact me. No money needed up front, but I need to know how many want one. Thanks.

Hey, ya'll, you need to check out this post, it is a really long one but it's an email from a guy who is stationed in Iraq now. It's very informative. I think if you take time to read it you will be heartened today.

I'm 100 percent in agreement with ya on that one. Myranda never did very well in school. I think she's going to be a fine upstanding productive citizen but school taught her very little. It's interesting to note though that she is better informed about global politics and history than most adults. Home schooling just wasn't an option for me but a love of learning centered on history, politics and Christianity in the home has certainly been more formative in a positive direction to her education than the public school. Overall, I'm not even sure I'd say attending public school had a positive outcome. There may have been more negative from 13 years in the camps than the proposed teaching.

Okay, winmag, let me know if I need to do anything else on my end.
We are all intelligent folks but if anybody has any questions they can and we'll get it addressed.
I have turned my breakfast room into a U.S. Army supply facility! I have a stack of things ready to send and I spent a few minutes the other day filling out a few customs forms so they will be ready to go for the knife and other supply shipments.
Hope all of ya'll out there checked out that post of the email from the soldier on the other thread that I linked to. It really lifted my spirits this morning. (i was kind of lonesome and turned on the boob tube when i woke up - i was inundated with lying media news.)
