The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I never have either, but anything left on the doorstep is completely visible, which is why I put the box behind the shrub. But they never use the box.

Sigh.

Well, if I had picked up the phone I would have said "it's too late, he's in bed" and hung up!

I think she's gotten the message of when NOT to call. Wife took care of that at 4:00 a.m. She did let them talk (he was apparently waiting for the call) 'cause she'd promised to take Jr. out to Waffle House when she got home from work. But she had a "chat" with the young lady before she gave Jr. the phone.

What's buggin' me now is the length of time they are staying on the phone. Yesterday I was taking Luke to King's Dominion and had gone by the ATM. I realized I had my wife's pass and not mine, so I tried to call the house for a solid 15 minutes so that someone could just run mine out to the car (and not get Luke out of the car seat, etc.). When I got to the house...Jr. got the message.

Wife and I will talk today about how we set time limits.

How much is engraving? - Is it spendy by the letter?

I'll get an idea on cost as soon as I get one of the knives. Those "engraving stores" at the mall use a pantograph setup. Once the stuff is spelled out, they can engrave one or many items quickly. I'll also tell them it's for our troops, and maybe get a deal.

I'll report back as soon as I have more news from the engraving front.

What gets me is these "Greatest Generation" gals that have not a speck of grey in their hair out there doing it.

Heh...I've seen that (okay, probably have been that...). A few years ago, when the Faberge eggs were traveling, the social event of the season was the "Faberge Ball." The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has (or had) the most extensive Faberge collection outside of Russia. We worked the event with our photographer friend. I had also worked the Steeplechase races that spring.

It just reminded me...doesn't matter how nicely you're dressed, or how much money you have...ugly drunk is ugly drunk.

(I don't do ugly drunk no more)

You know, Becky has people buying her free-range chicken eggs all the time...my impression was she couldn't keep up with the demand!

Becky, you could really rake in the bocks, I mean bucks! Seriously, you know there is a market for these eggs...people would buy them and if you did it "under the radar"...for friends and "aquaintences", I wouldn't think you'd need a permit or anything.

People don't want to buy eggs from tortured chickens...that could be your hook. You could print up a little informative pamphlet about how your free-range chickens are healthier and happier than commercial egg-producer chickens. Could be a real hobby business for you...not just a side benefit of your tick control!

You could call it "Bocky's Eggs"!!!

Tell you what. So far it looks like we're in favor of the url. I think that's good. And I really like the idea of a quote as well but I don't know if there's room on the blade. So, when these knives are ready to be mailed out, how 'bout I make up a little paper thingy to go with each one that has a great quote from the book - something about blades. And they will have the url on the blade... and a quote to read. With our Hobbit Hole logo and screen names? How does that sound? Still thinking on this... Please send any terrific quotes you think of.

Maybe you hid the box too well and they can't find it?

Wn, when I mailed out packages, I put an index card in with them with every contributor's name and address printed on it. It said "The Hobbit Hole Supports our troops" then it had the Hobbit Hole graphic, then under that it said "This care package compliments of" then it had the name and address of a contributor.

Maybe we could do something like that?

I taped one to the atomic fire balls and some to the Slim Jims...Look at this picture and you can see the cards taped to the Slim Jims...

My guess is that a lot of people around here have Comcast for their personal email. We'll see if things change. I will be most annoyed if I can't access my email from here.

So far it looks like we're in favor of the url.

I am in the process of making one more change to the address. I am thinking of moving Flat Frodo and the Chaplain pages to a new subdomain of "http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net". Or maybe "http://journeys.the-hobbit-hole.net". What do y'all think?
