The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Good morning, Osage, I just noticed that you and I signed up on the same day...'course I don't know that you are not a reincarnation of a previous existence here, which I am not.

Is Osage an Indian name?

Sam: Susan found FR during the fall of 2000, got hooked into the local Freeper scene and we were at all the Freeps during the Election 2000 fiasco. KC has a pretty good FR network. I lurked and occasionally posted under her handle 'till I found the FOTR posts and the NZ Hobbit hole. Lurked there until sign up.

Osage is an Indian tribe that lived in central MO, Northern AR, till about 1820-30 or so. In my case it refers to the wood they used for their bows. Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera), is also called Bo-dark, Hedge, Hedgeapple. The fruit is big greenish balls, about the size of softball. Osage orange was planted as a hedge for farms through out the midwest. It is a superior bow wood. Hard, resilient, durable, perfect wood for a bow. Performs well in a variety of bow styles as well, longbow, flatbow, recurve, and laminated wood bow. (guess by now you can see I really, really like it. lol)

I went to Kansas City, Missouri once on a convention, years ago, had a nice time, liked the place, the people seemed nice. I know there is a beautiful train station there, or used to be.

Barbecue Capital of the World indeed!

Is your NC BBQ the style that features pulled pork with the mustard based (yellow) sauce?

We have 2 kinds in NC: Eastern style is when you slow-cook a whole pig in a smoker all day and is chopped up and mixed with a vinegar/cayenne pepper sauce. The style I make is Lexington BBQ (Western NC style) where you cook just the shoulder over hickory (I usually cook them indirectly over charcoal with hickory chips for smoke) and is served usually sliced with a ketchup/black pepper sauce.

So I continue to maintain that Lembas is a type of thin golden cookie with a cream colored inside. Very crumbly and sweet like honey

Not crumbly. Wouldn't travel well. They can be crushed, but they aren't fragile!

I never want to eat until I am awake 3 hours or so, that is very unhobbitlike, to say the least.

I found this while looking for info on the osage orange:

If you don't have any squirrels in your neighborhood, you can still watch them on the web at BOB'S SQUIRREL HOUSE! Click on the picture to see them. These are Fox Squirrels in Austin, Texas.

You also have enemy squirrels in the neighborhood?

Apparently osage orange is not a citrus, but a mulberry relative, not that I know exactly what a mulberry is.

Yumm! I've always imagined them being shortbread like- similar to those shortbread Girl Scout cookies. (a box of those and I'm good to go for a day...)

Well...no, not yet. But the idea of setting up a live squirrel webcam is...I don't know...evil!

Good morning!

ACK! I have woken up with picture trouble on my PC this morning!

There are many grey lines that run all the way across my screen... looks like the text or color that is displayed is just smeared all the way across the screen.

my page is grey rather than white.

Is this my monitor broken? - Or my video card?
It is a 2+ year old system now, a Dell, CRT monitor with a NVidia GeForce Card.

Ramius, I know you aren't awake yet, I just called!

I am panelling the whole thing with knotty pine, putting stuffed fish and deer heads on the wall, a keg in the corner, a wooden bar, a refrigerator and freezer with venison in it and smoked fish, and old railroad lanterns for lighting and a fireplace for heat. And some old half collapsed easy chairs. Maybe a TV for football for the Bear and for watching dvd's of the movie.

Can I donate a pinball machine, and a bullet-trap that can handle up to .44 Mag?

(Sorry if this seems a bit late, I'm still a couple hundred posts behind you folks.)

Good morning everyone!

I'll be leaving the office early today to take Alyson for her boosters, poor thing! I can'ts stands it when she bawlses, no my Precioussss, I can't stands when baby Hobbitses cry!

On to breakfast, I can worry about that later.

Biscuits with sausage gravy, pancakes, scrambled eggs and a heaping platter of bacon are set up and ready to go. Coffee is brewed and all of the juices are in the cooler by the table, chilled in ice. ENJOY!

Now, I'll respod to various posts on this one, since I don't want to funkle as I do so often in here!

Sam Cree - I hope that us ladies can join you fellas in your little den now and again. I'd love to brush up on my darts and have a pint or two! Not to mention, I do happen to like watching football. :)

Corin - I will await your return, Master Dwarf. Thank you for easing my worries!

g'nad - You are never alone. I'm willing to learn how to use battle axes just to make you happy, if you don't mind.

JenB - I wish I had Gandalf the White's power so I could say "JenB, I release you!" Alas, I cannot, so here's praying that mommasan wakes up in a mood to do it herself. :)

2J - Lembas bread cook-off and Eowyn cloak contest for Entmoot? LOL! I think ksen's wife would banish him if we made that kind of mess in his home. *grin* That said, I will be continuing my search today for the "perfect" pattern and accessories.

Hair - I hope your computer rights itself soon. Can't have you disappearing, if you get my meaning. As for my home PC, it is finally fixed and running wonderfully. My sister is a master! She installed another 256MB of RAM, so now I have 328MB total. My graphics card borrowed some RAM and it jumped from 32MB to 48MB. I played FoTR last night and it was perfect! Now, if only I can get Frodo to Farmer Maggot's without being killed by the Black Rider. :(

Yeah, that sounds really good. I suppose we need some old books and magazines lying around, too.

I keep getting killed by them too. I'm getting frustrated. Isn't it creepy though? I get chills when I'm hear those hoofbeats get closer and closer...
