The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I just love the parents that let their kids 'do' stuff, and are confident of a child's ability to climb up on a missile. Not without having control of them, that is different, but let them play and touch.... Those kids may break a bone or two in their growing up, but so did I... I dunno. I have a friend who sincerely wishes her child would never 'do' anything.... don't touch, don't run, don't climb - She is gonna turn her into a wallflower! - Oh well...
To: HairOfTheDog
I liked hands on stuff. But probably because so many of our activities were centered around outdoor stuff. And they have one of those hands on science museums in Dallas that my kids used to love to go to. I guess there just wasn't much that was stuff that would be discouraged to them.
But, I hate to see it when you are in a place like an art gallery or something and somebody's kids are ignorring the "Don't Touch" rules. Went to a Renoir exhibit in Dallas one year and somebody would not control kids. The parents were walking around with those earphones on from the taped tour of the exhibit and ignorring kids. They were trying to jump and climb and touch art work. Museum asked them to control kids. Then they asked them to remove the kids. Parents were upset. I was about to kill the kids. (I could have gotten arrested over that!) In retrospect, it was funny. Those kids weren't old enough to be there. at least without having the parent's attention.

Yeah - It's a fine line isn't it? - I dunno.... Here we were on a tarmac with bombs arranged on carts everywhere and no ropes.... It looked like a 'hands on' exhibit to me!
And to most people...
I dunno.... I just felt bad for the kid with scaredy mom.... Wanted to get the kid a bad pony like mine that would rough him up a little and let him feel alive.
To: Wneighbor
I always plant mine in an open sunny-all-day place but that leaves it pretty open to ice and stuff. I do have a wooded lot...have to scrape the winshield only a few times a winter.

As long as there is no sign saying "Do Not Touch" I assume things like that are meant to be explored...heck, I'd be messin' with it!
I loved taking the boys to an air show and letting them crawl up inside the big military cargo planes...when the wars started, we got a chance to see them in action.
Called the doctor about the double vision and blurriness...he wants to see me tomorrow.
It's a shame...I had a radial keratotomy 20 some odd years ago and my right eye took perfectly...20/20 vision. My left eye didn't do so well, 20/40, but it was enough that my right eye could carry it.
Wouldn't you know...the plug hit me in the right eye. I sure hope it gets better, or at least can be fixed, even with glasses.

Well, I figured when you said it that they were allowed. If there were ropes or signs limiting access you woulda said so - right?
Contrary to the beliefs of dimocrats I tend to think our military is trained on how to put those bombs out there safely so they don't go off on because somebody touches it. Even if they were roped off with signs for something, I think at an airshow they'd have safeguards.
Bet that kid with the scared mom would have liked me to give him a bike ride too doncha think? pony ride, bike ride, kid don't know what he's missin'

Yes, the orpies are in the big coop now...all four sleep in the same nest box. They outgrew the cooplet and Joshua keeps all his toads in there now, during the evening, when he finds them.

Maybe that's it. Mine's been in too open an area. I believe I'll try the east side of the house near the south corner next time. I need something for there.

Well, you're right. That is a kick in the wrong place to have this happen to the best eye. It was bad enough that it happened but now this. Prayers are there and maybe tomorrow it will be better AND the doctor will have a good report.

I make the best chicken livers! All I do is rinse them well, dip them in flour, dip them in an egg/milk mixture, then dip them in the flour again and deep fry till golden. Eat 'em hot!

Sorry to say, but I would probably be the type of mom to say "stay away". I'm really paranoid like that even with stupid stuff. I try to bite my tongue and let them do their thing, but it doesn't always work out. I'm not much of an outdoor person, except for maybe beaches.LOL. My son though, he's teaching me about not freaking out...Heh!
To: 2Jedismom
I am worried about your eye.... I sure hope too, that it gets better and soon!
I am sure glad I never go in the kitchen! Course, I don't use eye protection often enough when I am weed-wacking....
To: 2Jedismom
Hopefully this blurriness is all a normal part of the healing process and he just wants to see you to make sure.
Sending good eye vibes your way!
To: Wneighbor
Well, I'm praying for a full recovery, but at the same time, praising God that it wasn't worse. Those prongs hit my wide open eye...coulda been a lot worse.

OK trini..... I shall figure the shipping and send you my pony!
Seriously.... I understand parents worrying.... falling or getting hurt could ruin a day or a few weeks, but still! - I'd rather have two minutes of wonderful!
Who am I to say really! - I don't have kids! I can be an easy critic.
To: 2Jedismom
Well, you were good to your neighbor. That was a GOOD moment for anybody to be your neighbor. I have only made chicken livers a few times. I like em fine when I make 'em I just don't do it.

That is what has really struck me as so funny about this whole thing...I am a safety fanatic when doing yard work! Sneakers, protective eyewear, leather gloves! Steve gave me the safety glasses when he gave me the lawn mower (for my birthday).
Then I come in the house and not 10 minutes later nearly blind myself!!

No, you are absolutely right. I am paranoid about the stupidest stuff with my kids! I really have to bite my tongue with them, because I know that kids need to explore, do things on their own and learn to take their lumps like everyone else. I don't wanna raise a bunch of wimps! For me though, it is a work in progress.
