The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Why must I like everything about the movies? And, can't you see the essential change in Faramir's character, and struggle? Heroes are supposed to know what is right; Book Faramir does, Movie Faramir doesn't. I think that Faramir's struggle to do the right thing could have been just as compelling and tension-building for the audience, but we never got to see that. Instead, we see a weak-willed Faramir vacillating between wanting to please his father by bringing him a great gift, and being afraid of the Ring's influence.

But, I don't want to interrupt the swoon-fest over the new pictures, so I'll drop it.

Furthermore, Faramir in the book wasn't all that likeable. He was a severe young man who I didn't care for much.

Guess that goes to show that tastes differ! Everytime I read the books, I fall desperately in love with Faramir. He's the most noble, pure character in the story, in a lot of ways. I've never seen him as severe.

I'm hoping ROTK will repair what they've done to him, but that was my biggest gripe with TTT.

Oh, OK, thanks Miss Hair. I was wondering, no trees at the entrance to the Paths, no Tom Bombadil (no loss not having him, actually), Arwen's supposed to be some kind of heroine even if she rides her horse so slowly the Ringwraiths could have caught her if they'd been riding tricycles while using hula hoops, no Scouring, Gollum's got a whiny ballad of a SONG, a year's wait between books (I distinctly remember being able to start the next book immediately after finishing the previous one), Legolas is played by some gay guy who, after the recent Supreme Court decision, is probably gonna change his name to Legolass and propose marriage to Gimli (Hey, Gimli, keep the old axe handy!), what the heck kind of LOTR movie is this anyway?

You don't have to like everything in the movies. No one is saying that you do. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. It is a valid one... and one I have heard from numerous people.

I don't like Faramir, so he could have been a mass murderer, and I wouldn't care. Change Smeagol though, and I would be singing a different tune.

You don't have to drop it, but by your post, I didn't think you wanted it go any further. And in case you haven't noticed, whenever there is a "dust-up", I seem to be at the center of it... I didn't want to hurt any feelings or make anyone nervous.

I will disagree with your "heros are supposed to know what is right." Only in fairy tales (which I admit LOTR's is)... But, Jackson's version is more real...

You see Faramir as weak-willed. I don't see that at all. Just because he didn't immediately turn Frodo loose, somehow he is diminished? Nonsense!

And pleasing his father by bringing him a great gift is your spin on the scene since Faramir doesn't bring it up... And if Faramir is bringing the ring to Gondor, then he isn't afraid of it... he plans to use it.

I agree with you there. My reading of his character in the book is that he is the Good Steward. He can resist the Ring's temptation, because he does not want Power for himself; instead, he wants to be the caretaker of Gondor, keeping things going until the King can return. Once Aragorn takes the throne, Faramir is happy to return to his beloved Ithilien and heal the land there; caretaking, again.

Huh... the same could be said of the way his relationship with Eowyn develops, in the Houses of Healing. Hmm.

That's okay... you think Scarlett is a "brat"... I see far more depth in the character than a "brat"...

You can have Faramir... He's a waste of pages...

What I think is interesting is how 50 people can read or see the same thing and have 50 different opinions all valid and worthwhile... I like discussing them...

HA! You need not "must like"! ( You must have missed my 48,650 ) I just thought it was funny when you said "I still don't like it" and I thought it needed to be punctuated with [stomps foot]!

Was just funnin' ya.
