Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

wimpifyingNo.... he had just been receiving very bad advice! just were a country that had been led into weakness by bad counsel. I thought it was a poignant lesson for any leader. And even in the book, Theoden is kind of led around by whoever is advising him. ;~D
When you say (and Women) are you talking about the women in the caves?
I don't think they were portrayed as wimpy, I thought it was poignant that it showed how the fighting force had been driven out, leaving only the very young and the very old, and their armaments had been allowed to rust. Those mothers were not wimpy but grief stricken at sending their boys into a war without a lot of hope.... that scene in the caves with them pulling out boys of 10 or 11 to fight is one of my very favorite scenes. I found their emotion very intense and not dishonorable at all.

You haven't seen the whole Faramir yet...
Like Aragorn, he'll be fine. Pilipa Boyens likes to grow people into greatness.... She is a big fan of the humble beginning.

Ladies...do you remember Freeper BCM that lost his life in the WTC?I remember seeing clips of the firefighter who cussed out Osama. I didn't know his brother was FReeper.
Well, here's Eagles Up for the entire Moran clan.

Hmmm, I'd rather live with Faramir. ;)

Hmmm, I'd rather live with Faramir. ;)You know, as soon as I posted that, I realized someone would probably take it that way. ;)
He's soooo wonderful in the book, though! Couldn't they have left him that way? I mean...he's still umm...not bad looking, but did they have to change his CHARACTER?

I mean...he's still umm...not bad looking, but did they have to change his CHARACTER? I have hope that things'll be put right with rotk.

Since a movie is different than a book, it served the story to have the conflict between Theoden and Aragorn (his unwillingness to fight) and between Theoden and Theoden (the dawning of understanding that this battle must be won)...
Since TTT was positioning the characters to be ready for the climax of ROTK, it served the story exceptionally well to have Aragorn and Theoden ride out into the Urak-Hai under what seems to be overwhelming odds.
All action stories are "The Perils of Pauline" and if there is no peril than there is no point.
Unfortunately, the men and women of Rohan do get the shaft... but the story is not about them. It is about Aragorn and Frodo... the rest of the actors serve them...

I know but there not the same. And if I was going to spend 12,000- 18,000 on a horse it has to be perfect. Like shadowfax, I'm assuming he was english, I would pay a high price for him, or Arod or Asfolth.

When you say (and Women) are you talking about the women in the caves?Yes, the Weeping Women of Rohan. IMO, it would have been just as valid to play the scene with them stoicly sending their children to fight, exhorting them to do well. I hold that it would have been more true to the nature of a warrior people; for example, the Romans or Vikings.
But, we've had this argument before, you PJ-bot you. ;)

I didn't know he played the whistle until today.
Rugerman, do you remember about the FReeper I was telling you about a while back that died in the WTC? He played the whistle.

Now, I will disagree with you there. The character of Faramir was set up perfectly. If you listen to the exchange between Galadriel and Elrond, you will see that Jackson was very true to Faramir's character.
Galadriel: "Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The young captain of Gondor has but to extend his hand to take the Ring for his own and the world will fall. It is close now, so close to achieving his (Sauron's) goal."
Then we cut to Faramir interrogating Frodo.
But it's the Peril of Pauline scenario... Frodo and the ring must be put into danger... So Faramir will take the ring to Gondor.
The audience gasps... "Oh, no! Is Faramir just like Boromir! What will happen next?"
What happens next is that Faramir "shows his quality." We have a foreshadowing, a foretaste that the war against Sauron will be won.
In FOTR, Gandolf says that strength lies in men. Elrond rejects this. Galadriel says the same thing. That whether the war is won or lost depends on the "strength" of men.
What men we have!
Aragorn, Theoden, and Faramir... all who have struggled within themselves (great drama) to find the courage and strength (great drama) to fight a war (great drama) that must be won (great drama)... And we are convinced they will win because when they won against themselves (great drama)... they won the war.
No, these men will not fail.

Well, we went down and they really were just closed up. The woman selling fry bread was there, though, so I bought some and we home now, snacking on that with honey!

it served the storyYes, that's why I eventually got over my disagreements with the movie... I realized there had to be differences from the book, and IMO pretty much all of the changes made for the movies are *logical* changes. That is, I think they can all be justified as necessary to better tell the story in this different medium. So, I don't denounce the movies... I just occasionally complain a bit. Especially on a slow day. ;)

I would not have affection for a people whose mothers would send children to die without a tear.

Back from my ride. What a great day. Not to hot nice breeze. Rusty and I worked on triming some of the trails back. Good lessons in standing, sidepassing, and stopping and standing in awkward postions. He did real good. We actually stayed out longer then I intended because it was so nice.
The persimmons are getting ripe, but the blackberries look to be burning up or someone else is getting them, I did n't go down to the spot far from home though. I don't know how many people go down there. It's pretty far back in the woods, but we do get alot of 4-wheelers lately:(.
Let me know if you want to try riding Mon. or Tue. evening next week. Right now I am open for either.

Ok...I'll talk to Steve...see what would be best.
I had a nice brief talk with the fry bread lady! I'd like to have a concessions booth like that some day...just go from festival to festival! I think it would be fun!

Are you home on Sun. evening around 5:00?, and if so would it be an impostion for me to drop them off on my way to church? We go right by there. I am never sure of the exact time we are coming thru on our way home, because we always eat out with the kids.
If that won't work, and you come and ride Mon. or Tue. you could get them then, and I won't start saving them till Sat.
