The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Okay... all you hobbitses and elves...
I have a question about the Two Towers, and I need your help.
In the movie, Aragorn and Theoden have this exchange:
"I will not risk open war," Theoden says.
"Open war is upon you whether you risk it not," Aragorn replies.
Is there an exchange like that in the book? If it is, approximately, what page is it on?
If not, can you buy the script in book format?
Thank you for your help.

It's $19.95 a month, Thanks, Suzi. I'll at least look at their site. I don't think I watch enough movies for even the $20 to be worth it, but it's also true that I can't get most of the movies I'd like to watch here. They just don't carry all that many, epecially older movies.
To: SuziQ
Thanks for that link. I might look into it for my parents. Their closest video store is a thirty minute drive- delivery service would be very convenient.
To: Lil'freeper
delivery service would be very convenient. Hm...hadn't really thought of that aspect. The nearest DECENT video place is twenty five miles away. Don't rent from there very often, so I'm stuck with the lousy selection we have at the two tiny local places.

Looks like a good shoe job to me, and like you said not that radical. Bar shoes can make a horse so awkward and look unbalanced. No wonder they have trouble keeping them on.

No, there isn't a dialogue like that that I found.... Theoden was not as reluctant, once awakened, in the book as he was in the film.
'Take back your sword, Éomer, sister-son!' said the king. 'Go, Háma, and seek my own sword! Gríma has it in his keeping. Bring him to me also. Now, Gandalf, you said that you had counsel to give, if I would hear it. What is your counsel?' 'You have yourself already taken it,' answered Gandalf. 'To put your trust in Éomer, rather than in a man of crooked mind. To cast aside regret and fear. To do the deed at hand. Every man that can ride should be sent west at once, as Éomer counselled you: we must first destroy the threat of Saruman, while we have time. If we fail, we fall. If we succeed then we will face the next task. Meanwhile your people that are left, the women and the children and the old, should stay to the refuges that you have in the mountains. Were they not prepared against just such an evil day as this? Let them take provision, but delay not, nor burden themselves with treasures, great or small. It is their lives that are at stake.'
'This counsel seems good to me now,' said Théoden. 'Let all my folk get ready! But you my guests-truly you said, Gandalf, that the courtesy of my hall is lessened. You have ridden through the night, and the morning wears away. You have had neither sleep nor food. A guest-house shall be made ready: there you shall sleep, when you have eaten.'
'Nay, lord,' said Aragorn. 'There is no rest yet for the weary. The men of Rohan must ride forth today, and we will ride with them, axe, sword, and bow. We did not bring them to rest against your wall, Lord of the Mark. And I promised Éomer that my sword and his should be drawn together.'
'Now indeed there is hope of victory!' said Éomer.
'Hope, yes,' said Gandalf. 'But Isengard is strong. And other perils draw ever nearer. Do not delay, Théoden, when we are gone. Lead your people swiftly to the Hold of Dunharrow in the hills!'
'Nay, Gandalf!' said the king. 'You do not know your own skill in healing. It shall not be so. I myself will go to war, to fall in the front of the battle, if it must be. Thus shall I sleep better.'
I don't know if you can buy the script.... but an unofficial yet I think accurate one is online here:

Looks like a good shoe job to me, and like you said not that radical. Bar shoes can make a horse so awkward and look unbalanced. No wonder they have trouble keeping them on. And if that is all it takes to make him comfortable, then I would be pleased.... But that isn't much is it? He had other choices of pads in his truck, more definate and thicker wedges... I think his intent is to start at the minimum and work up as needed.

Then it is as I remember it...
In the book, Theoden was ready to fight. In the movie, he was not.

I think if that is his intent that is good. I would think over correction could lead to other problems.
I can't remember, was Bay still experiencing some lamesness at the time you the farrier got there and put the shoes on? Or was it an on again, off again, lameness?

He was ready once he woke up, yes. He wasn't ready until they got rid of Wormtongue.

I hadn't worked him so I don't know for sure if he was any better before the shoes.... In watching him in the pasture, he had been having some fits and bouts of play where he looked very good. But at rest he still has been standing with his feet out in front of him or alternating resting one front by pointing it out in front.
