The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Does anyone have any idea what we can do with it?

How about a garden arch? You could put one end of the arch next to or over the well-cap and have the arch pass over the walk-way. Plant some vines so they crawl up the archway, and that would help cover the well-cap and make it less noticeable. But, you could still get at everything pretty easily.

This is an interesting shot from Ian McKellan's page about recent re-shoots for Return of the King. This must be a new Liberty Stallion, the original stallion Demero (Andalusian) was retired due to Melanoma. I think this horse is "Blanco".... There were two.

I think the background horse training that went into these movies is worthy of a documentary, and I hope that one of the DVD sets expands on it.

The Liberty training that went into Shadowfax is neat... and in the scenes where Gandalf rides without bridle in that movie was all real (I only say one scene where they cheated and had a neck rope on). Seeing him in the scenes that made the cut so far in TTT, running across a field, perfoming movements that are 'more or less' natural are one level.... But to see stuff like this is amazing. Completely un-natural and scary environment, no bridle, and horse trained to stand on a board to ensure proper position. Really really neat work.

Morning all! Made it here fine, didn't even have to take my shoes off for security! SuziQ will be mini-mooting tonight, going to see TTT again.

You betcha!

Man is it ever hot as the dickens here. And grandma has an old house with no AC. Dad and I went and bought a couple little fans for the bedrooms, but its still kind of hard to sleep when you're all sticky. It should be cooling off in day or two, though.

I have 30 minutes left on the library computer here. Gotta catch up the spoilers you posted.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work out for me to take Frodo anywhere this time. Our trip to Boston is tomorrow, when SuziQ is taking him to NYC. We'll get together in MN eventually, though.

Really really neat work.

You know, your post here made me think again about the 'Boy with a Bow' article (or whatever it was titled, you know the one.) So much of movie making seems to be cleverly done until you bring in the professional opinion. Peter Jackson has put out a combined piece of work that stands up to more than an amatuer viewing -- on so many levels. The bowman, the horseman, the swordsmen, the medieval armor buff and the Tolkien fan, and more! He even has pleased the dwarves. :)

A/C window units are sooo inexpensive now. Not much more than a good fan, and they are much more efficient than they used to be, energy wise. And, if you are hot, think how hot your computer is getting. I would maybe put one in that room only, just in case (and then solve the other problem by sleeping with the computer) :)

Hey there! Checking in from Miami.

It's a comfortable sort of steamy hot. Dang. Who do I talk to about buying some fog-free glasses? Do people just not wear glasses here? What's the deal?

Actually, there's no computer there. I'm freeping from the library. We did think about getting a window AC unit, but since the heat wave is supposed to be over soon, we figured it wasn't worth the money.

Well that is great, I am glad they enjoyed doing it. I am sorry though I sent so many:), I never even thought about that overwelhming her. She could have just incubated as many as she wanted and pitched the rest. I would not have cared at all.

Tell her I will take them off her hands anytime she is ready, and she and anyone else is welcome to as many as they want. I can always get more.

Hi Ramius.

You just have to wipe them off when you walk outside from air conditioning, then they are OK. I had supposed it was very humid in WA as well.

I'm out of town tonight, Friday and Saturday, unfortunately, but back on Sunday, if you are still here. But I think Ruthy is here straight through, and has a baby sitter.

I had planned on being in town tonight, but something came up, so will be gone this afternoon, earlier than expected. If I don't get to meet you now, I hope to at the Moot, or perhaps you'll be in Miami again, or still here Sunday.

Was looking forward to talking over some boating and USCG stuff, since I spent a good part of my life on salt water too.

Hey Ramius!

Yes, it is very muggy here and my sunglasses always fog up. I wear contacts, so I avoid the sudden blindness issue.

If you stop by any drug store, they should have this liquid that you wipe on your glasses to keep them from fogging. It costs a couple bucks.
