Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I was thinking a little about getting ducks or a couple big ole farm geese. Maybe I shouldn't upset the balance I seem to have now.

If the balance gets upset, you can always have some canard or oie à l'orange instead of your usual Elf à l'orange...

sorry 'bout not closing my tags. Meant to say: Harumph. If you go, can Smeags stay, at least?

There may be a little bit of Pit in that lab from the look of his head.... that would explain the blue eye I think too.
The horse could be a gem in the rough really.... $350 gamble is not too much. She is green broke at 17, and in the right hands might become a nice mount. She hasn't been over-used so far, so she at least isn't 17 and broken down.

I actually had a polite debate about barbecue with Destructor once on another thread. :) Bwahahahaaaaa! I'm grinning at the thought of it.

Hullo Argh! Dropping in to yank my chain also? ;~D
I am afraid the coyotes would switch from bunny to duck! Bunnies are a lot of work to catch.... quick little things. Big ole fat farm duck..... hmmmmmmmm.

True. That lab's got a broad skull, indicative of a Staff or Pit. But nothing else (besides the eye) looks remarkably outside of Lab conformity. Weird!
As for the mare, I love her sassy expression!

Small bird are pretty easy to clean, I believe. But I sort of agree that they are kind of a pain to eat.
My brother once bought his wife a shotgun and took her dove hunting, she is not that great a shot.
He went by later to check on how she was doing. There were 3 nice doves at her feet that she'd killed, and, he said, a mountain of brass next to her that made it look like she'd been holding off the entire Mexican Army.

(did you see that thread?)Aww, crap. I just had to go look at it.

After reading more of what you said, I think a shotgun is the only safe way to do any shooting in your situation. Very heavy birdshot or light buckshot is the best.
If you decide to try it, set up a large piece of cardboad about where you expect the critters, and take a test shot from your house to get some idea of pattern density, and any adjustments for range.
It's a shame you can't just set up a claymore, and take them all out with one clack. :)
I get a little antsy about any predators that weigh more than a pound or two. Which is why if I lived in Monroe County, south of Detroit, I would not be too happy with how they're handling the possible appearance of cougars. They had the local dogcatcher on TV, and he suggested cougars, if they really are out there, are no problem as long as you keep your pets and children indoors. It's bureaucrats like him that make the policy of "shoot, shovel, and shut up" acceptable.
Government policy is creating breeds of predators and pests (like raccoons) that not only know that human habitation gets them food, but protection, too. They're like "garbage dump" bears.

Glad that you are OK. Also that Grama was with someone who loved her at the end, a blessing.

"Government policy is creating breeds of predators and pests (like raccoons) that not only know that human habitation gets them food, but protection, too. They're like "garbage dump" bears." Some people think sharks fall in that category too, though I am not so sure.
