Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

LOL...oh my:)
Well...we use martin houses and keep standing water to a minimum.
It's funny, when we first moved out here in the country we all just about got ate up every year, now we hardly ever get bit. I've wondered if you don't use some kind of repellant, does your own system build up some kind of immunity?

Good morning all! I hope ecurbh and WN go off safe on their trips! Ramius is traveling, today in Wa DC, and he goes to Miami in a few days. Who else is traveling? - I forget because I haven't had coffee yet. This is a summer of a lot of adventuring! Pray they all have the sense to stay off the road.
LF: WOO HOO for the hole in the ground!
Golden shovel award!

Heh.... Rosie I hope you wore something cotton today in that humidity! I have a bit of fog this morning here, but it is clear as blue above it. Will be a nice day for hay delivery.
Sam, I think rubbing motor oil all over your body will keep away more than just mosquitos.
Yes, Becky, you have a 2 hour head start! 'tis only just 6 now!

Are you on city water? - Usually that stays on.... either because they power it, or because there is enough water in the system to last a short outage...
I am on a well. No power no water. I have that 55 gallon barrel in the barn for emergency water, but it makes for a lousy shower!

"I've wondered if you don't use some kind of repellant, does your own system build up some kind of immunity?"
I've often wondered that. After all, the Indians have been living in the Everglades for over 150 years, without even screens on their chickees. Not to mention various white people that have done the same over the years.
Once went fishing, though, with an elderly guy who lived in Everglades City, on the Baron River. He finally retired to Miami, said he just couldn't stand the Everglades mosquitos anymore, after a lifetime of them.
When we drove into Everglades City that morning, soon as the car was slowed down enough, it was surrounded by a cloud of mosquitos before we even opened it up or got it stopped, they could smell us in there.

I dislike mosquitos, but I detest black flies. I don't think you guys even have those down there. They're horrible...crawl in your eyes and ears and noses and leave bleeding bites instead of just bumpy ones. Luckily they're only around until midsummer or so...by fall they're gone.
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
we use martin houses Tell me more about those. Do martins like mosquitoes? If you build a martin house, will they come? I was thinking about putting in a bat house or two...
To: HairOfTheDog
Sorry about that, it just slipped out.

This life is a test... I just wish I knew what kind.

From what I understand, I am no expert:), but a martins main food source is mosquitoes. I don't know the reason, maybe because Bixby is bottom land, but we have lots of mosquitoes here. The city sprays regularly. More so then like Tulsa. But the city also has put up lots of Martin houses around town, and alot of people have them in their yards.

I remember one time after we had a flood here, that happens alot, the mosquitoes were like that. You could not go out without being covered with them.
When we first moved here we were also all affected by allergies, I guessbeing surronded by all the woods. A neighbor up the road, had children the same age as mine. Her kids got medicated with antihistamines practacilly every night, slightest sniffle. I never medicated mine unless they got an infection. Those kids are still having problems to this day with allergies, in fact one of them took allergy shots everyday. My children have now grown out of them, and we are very seldom affected. I think society has used too much stuff, repellants, antihistamines, decongestants, etc. so that our own systems have become weak.

I know. There's more than a few I've gotten wrong so far. And I've gotten some right, too. But I haven't really started on the hardest ones yet.
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
I think there is something too that.
I am sitting here wondering why, in our rainy mild climate, we don't have a lot of mosquitos all the time.
If there are mosquitos here, it is only because there is a pond nearby. We don't have them everywhere.

Something *to* that *too*.
Wanted to add that there is no organized spraying for mosquitos here either.
