The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I can't wait to see that tough ranger turn into a romantic!

The mantle was wrought for his mother, Finduilas of Amroth, who died untimely, and was to him but a memory of loveliness in far days and of his first grief; and her robe seemed to him raiment fitting for the beauty and sadness of Éowyn.

I wanna order a case of Vernor's. Maybe when I get my first paycheck...

I told Dad we need to start a pool for displaced Midwesterners and buy a couple boxes of Vernor's a month. I'd pay into it!

Personally, I'd like a great blue mantle the colour of a deep summer-night, and set with silver stars about the hem and throat.

Times like these are when I really wish I could sew!

I'm getting a Sweetone and a Walton as well as the Susato. Hopefully at least ONE plays in tune!

I need to check and see where thewhistleshop.com is located so I can estimate about when I'll get 'em. Hopefully by early next week.

I'd have to see the one from the ROTK first...after it comes out, I'm sure patterns will show up on the net. Maybe for my birthday Next year!

I always thought it was a rich deep velvet. And blue is my favorite color. Any shade of blue except "baby blue". Even the boy's nurseries were done in deep blue and smokey blue colors!

I can't either. I love the actor they cast...his voice gives me chills.

That passages people have been posting are wonderful. Ooo I can't wait to start reading it! Actually....my manager went out and bought the books on CD (unabridged) the very night I was looking at them. She is going to loan them to me! :-)

Hehehe....(So far)the original sounds a bit flat only with certain tracks on that CD. It's on pitch with cuts on other CD's.

Maybe it's a "Pavarotti" thing.

I like the idea of having something I don't have to tune - lately I have been playing both fiddle and mandolin on Thursday nights, which means at LEAST 12 strings to tune, and more if I bring guitar as I sometimes do. But I'm hoping the whistles are fairly OK. Then, my brother says if they're close, you can usually get them to play in tune by varying your blowing technique...like I'm gonna be able to do THAT!

Mootless in Carolina.

We're sorry. Hop a plane to Austin Friday afternoon! Yeah! That's the ticket. And Ruthie, I'd like one of those platters of bacon and about a half dozen biscuits please. Oh, and an extra large mug of that coffee. Thanks so much.

"do you get the sense of mirth in Gandalf though?"

Yes...I noticed on second viewing that at the end of the battle of Helm's Deep, he was smiling as he rode around killing orcs.

I remember Tolkien describing Eomer as having the joy of battle in him at one point as he rode around in some battle in the book, so I am wondering if Jackson was drawing from that particular description for this scene.

Will watch for the sense of mirth more on next viewing:-)

The Clarke original can't be tuned and I had a hard time getting it to work with blowing technique. Like I said, it was only on a few of the CD tracks.....so everybody else must be sharp, right?

I know that everyone was saying that the movie was dark and dreadful, but I come out of it feeling fantastic Like "Yes! We're cooking with gas now!"

I was this close to joining the military in my youth...maybe I should have.

I'm glad you have enjoyed the thread this morning! Sometimes it's like this and it's when I love being here the most. Sure, I have aquainences and even parents and spouse that have read the books, but no one understands the delight I take in them like these guys in the Hole.
