Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Good morning!
I figured out what breed Roy is last night...she's a Black Sex-Link.
What they do is breed a Rhode Island Red and a Barred Plymouth Rock (Jar Jar is a Barred Plymouth Rock) and what they get is black chicks. Except the males ALWAYS have a white spot on their heads.
Well, now that Roy is getting her feathers, it's obvious she's a black sex link...all black except for reddish feathers on her neck. And since she never had a white spot on her head, she has to be female.
Here is a Black sex-link hen...

Ideal is a huge hatchery...and the most common "feed store" chicks they send out are just what Jar Jar and Roy are. They are utility chickens.

Well, the chicken on Garfield and Friend's name is Roy. That is where Matthew got it.
Jar Jar is doing good...I still hear an occassional sniffle, but nothing too bad. She's growing well too.

Did you know that there were NINE people chatting in the chicken chat at midnight last night??
I showed them these pictures and they agreed they were pullets at least. Whew! I just didn't want to have to deal with roosters...even though Becky kindly said she'd take them.
