Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You bet. That all sounds great. And I do have a pair of ropers...no self-respecting Texas woman would be without them, imo! I'll come prepared.
Just let me know! It sounds great. I'll have to take pictures, of course!

Horses can get what you call cinchy. Meaning if the cinch has been pulled to tight to quick to often they will blow up when they are cinched. We have even considered that as being Belle's problem. So far there are just too many variables that we haven't been able to narrow down, because of the infrequency of the fits.
But, OTOH, I never pull the cinch tight quick. Never real tight, I ride with it pretty loose actually, just snug enough to keep it from rubbing, which can be a problem. You can get them too loose also.

Hey you Atkins people, would you recommend one of his books for me? Hey you Atkins people, would you recommend one of his books for me? Well...it's not exactly Atkins but pretty close. The diet I followed I got from book called "The Carbohydrate Addict's Life Span Program" by Dr. Richard F. Heller.
It's a wonderful diet that I lost 25 pounds on in three months last year and it's been ten months since I reaced my goal and haven't gained a single pound back. AND the neatest thing about this diet is that you NEVER feel hungry.

By "blow up", do you mean pull in a deep breath to puff out the barrel of their chests or does it mean they pitch a fit?
I'm trying to learn horse lingo here. *grin*

Even though I have not read any of his other books, I think the one to start with is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. That one explains the scientific basis for his conclusions about diet (how your body metabolizes carbs, fat and protein), and the 4 basic phases of his nutritional approach. I'm about halfway through the book so far.

OK..I'll find out as soon as I can. I am going to ride with my daughter tonight down at the arena, I will get her saddle.
Do you remember how to get here, or will I need to meet you again? I don't mind just want to know to figure times.

Haven't read "Atkins for Life", but I owned (and loaned) "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution". My impression is that it is the most complete version. Very interesting read. A little weak in some areas but mostly very good.

AND the neatest thing about this diet is that you NEVER feel hungry.I love that part. I actually have to remind myself to eat! And there is also the sustained energy throughout the day. No more wild swings in mood and energy level due to blood sugar instability.

The diet I followed I got from book called "The Carbohydrate Addict's Life Span Program" by Dr. Richard F. Heller. Thanks mtngrl! I'll write that one down.
I'm looking for something that will give me lists of ok foods and tell me how to figure out what I am supposed to, and what I'm not supposed to eat.
For example (the following numbers are entirely made up): Bread counts 10 carbs, ham counts as 2, etc, and you are allowed 30 a day. I'm looking for stuff like that.

Pitch a fit:).
In my experience most horses have to have the cinch tightened a time or two after you start riding. I don't know if they deliberatly blow up their gut to make the cinch loose or if its just like women in girdles. After it;s been on awhile it gets looser.
I ususally set the saddle on and fix the cinch first. Then the back cinch, then the breast collar. Then they usually stand there while I get my water bottles ready, put on my boots, put the dogs up, etc. then I bridle, walk them a few steps, then check the cinch again. By that time it's loosened up a bit. If I happen to dismount later, I check it then too. But I have seen idio...well, people who stand with their backs to the cinch with it over their shoulder for leverage pulling the cinch tight as soon as they saddle. I just cringe. Poor horse. Probably feels like he's being cut in two.

Hmmm...Atkins isn't too scripted in that you're pretty much on your own to measure and count and put together menus for yourself. He makes suggestions and gives guidelines, a sample menu or two. BUT I think there is great value to taking time to investigate what's in the foods you like to eat, to measure and pay attention to how much you're eating, and the effect of foods on the body. My experience is that there's a huge mental, intellectual, and knowledge component to success in the program. So the book is worth a read- even if you don't follow it to a T.
To: ksen
Atkins' website is great, it has all the information you need to get started. Just look under the section called "How to do Atkins". I didn't start the book until a few after I started his system.
