Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Truly one of the funniest lines ever in a movie. Only "I think we are going to need a bigger boat" from Jaws is funnier.

Do you think horses have expressions in their eyes? or am I a bleeding heart:) Very much so! Of course they do, you can see fear or pain or contentedness in their eyes. And their only instinct for dealing with a fear or a pain is to *run*. It is all she can think of to make it stop.
If there is a source of pain, it sounds like it is infrequent enough that she doesn't live in nervous fear of it happening at any time. If I had frequent and sudden bouts of pain I think it would make me a bit jumpy all the time.
If infrequent and happening only at particular times you may be able to find the source of it, or at least find a different path that always avoids that circumstance, like a different saddle-girth-style, or a medical treatment, if you could find the source of it.... At least you can learn to spot the signs and bail before it happens if, once it happens, she loses all rational thought or ability to settle down. But that to me means a future of riding in an arena or other closed environment until it is long since any episode, and I don't know how long.... to have her loose on trail or a trail head parking area is a danger to everyone and yourself.
That she gives a physical sign and reacts only at particular times makes your mare easier to manage than the Arab in the other case, who would be fine unless anything unexpected happened. She would go off at any time.

Oh, good morning! And welcome to the Hobbit Hole! I can see from your FR Homepage that you're probably going to fit right in. :)
And, you're from California? I think you're our first Californian!
Anyway, hope you have fun! :)

I have no doubt that dogs have emotions, and show them. I would assume horses do too. :) I think dogs have emotions also, we have a dog that I know has been grieving over the death of another dog we had. They had been buddies for yrs.
But a problem beginner horse owners have, IMO, is thinking that horses are big dogs. Horses physcics are completly different then dogs, they are intelligent, but in a different way then horses.
But the way you describe your dogs seizures and recovery period is the same as I see in this horse.
She was so funny, when she had her foal, of course everyone was petting the baby and giving it all kinds of attention. If I was out there doing that she would come and walk between me and the baby, at first I thought she was protecting, but it finally dawned on me SHE wanted to be petted. She didn't care what was going on with the baby, she just wanted ME to pet HER. I spent ALOT of time with this mare. I slept 10 nights in the barn to be there when the baby was born. More to make sure everything went alright for the mare then to see the baby born. I did not want to loose the mare.
Damn, just talking about this this morning makes me sick. I loved that horse, and wish she could be fixed.:(

Another reason I think the problem has something to do with either a bad memory from her breaking in or an injury that flairs up. Becky If you can definatively learn that the source is something like that (as sure as we ever are) then at least you could know that she would make a good brood mare, and she isn't unsuitable genetically.... It means that her life isn't necessarily over if she can't be ridden.

I didn't see you last post but I posted. The last part sounds more like a seizure (dazed, confused) but I'm surprised you would get this much warning before she starts. To me, that's the part that seems to indicate it might be something else.

You know everything I always wanted to know about htlm but was afraid to ask. Where did you learn all of that stuff? You're bringing back memories! I learned html in my college days. I had a string of psycho roommates and I found life was much easier if I did all my studying and work at the computer labs. These were the heady, early days of the internet when everyone had garrish background tiles with blinking yellow type on their pages that gave you headaches and permanently crossed eyes.
One evening I looked up to see a very scary*, and heavily pierced individual working on a webpage. Being the fearless type I asked him what he was doing and he showed me the basics. He printed out the source code of his page and annotated what everything did. It was straightforward and I picked it up pretty quickly. Then I learned photoshop- again by killing time to avoid evil roommates- and started doing webpage work for various departments on campus. Lots of fun. I've lost track of a lot of the modern stuff, style-sheets and such, 'cuz when I graduated and got a job I didn't have the time to kill. That's the story.
There's lots-o-tutorials online, I'm sure you're familiar with FR's HTML Sandbox. But mostly you get better by studying other people's code.
*Not only was Scary Jason a neo-pagan, he was a neo-barbarian. He never bathed or shaved, always wore baggy overalls with no shirt or anything else (I took his word for this). He was tatooed and pierced (in places that again, I took his word for). He was rank and stinky and ate only raw meat. He had an obsession with Jewel, the singer and was on a personal crusade to ban blinking text. Aaaah, college.

I'm no doctor or vet, but from reading your description I would think that it could be a physical problem, perhaps with her spine. The saddle, and especially weight in the saddle, could be causing a nerve to be pinched or pressed wrong, which could trigger a seizure.
Can you have the vet do an x-ray of her back and spine, to look for that possibility?

That woman needs to be locked up. Anywhere. Just someplace scure.

Thanks for the input. I am sitting here looking at her right now, and it breaks my heart. We are going to try the feed change and minerals. Then just slowly start putting the saddle on her and see what happens. Maybe give her the next year to try all this. If it doesn't work, and Dot is still doing ok we may breed her again. Nothing else to do but put her down, and I'm not ready for that yet.

That's because I'm feeling rather puckish this morning. Grades are in, weight is down, Saturday is my birthday, I got a new kitten... and I have a new dress on today.

I thought there was warnings to seizures. That you just have to recognize the warnings is the trick??

I like "Arsenic and Old Lace", though I've seen it too many times. How on earth did I forget that one when listing my favorites? It's a fantastic movie!
It's funny though, Cary Grant didn't like that movie and never watched it. He gave up the profits from that movie to help with the war effort.
Does this crack you up like it does me?

LOL!
