The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

those are raspberries under the frame in the background... we have patches of wild blackberries too...

used to be dense tall brush up to the large oak tree just to the right of the raspberries... I've cleared that back about 120 yards... 'nother thirty er forty tuh go...

Same here....planted late because it was so wet. Lots of weeds, though. Weeds, catnip, and zinnias.

NO DOUBT!!!

Well, I have pulled the carpet up in my den so I can try to find the broken water pipe from last week. But, I'm just not motivated to get under the house and see. It might happen tomorrow instead of today.

Yep, I just found a pack of zinnia seeds I'm gonna go ahead and put out. Pack says by mid-May in our region, but we'll try. And I still have to finish setting out the lilies and iris that my m-i-l brought.

We have some tomatoes on the plant that my m-i-l law brought. But the seeds that I planted haven't done well. I think they drowned.

OT this question is yours (for 200 points)...We have a couple of potted geraniums out front. They're a pretty good size (we bought 'em that way, didn't grow them). Some of the leaves are now turning yellow. Do we have a problem or are they just too darned wet?

My lovely catnip that I grew from seed early this spring died again when I put it in the yard. Need to check out the soil requirements. Can't figure out why it's dying here. Have tried 3 places in the yard now.

My gardening project right now is Laurel.... I took 50 cuttings off of my Dad's big Laurel bush at the beach house that I am going to try to root. Wanna make myself a hedge between me and the neighbor, and me and the store.

I think they will root in water, then I suppose I should move them to small pots at first till they get established before sticking them in the ground.... anyone have any experience in this?

The catnip at The House seeds itself. I can send you some plants if you like.

Leaves die, especially the biggest oldest leaves on a geranium.... pinch them off and don't worry about it unless the whole plant is turning. Be brutal about pinching back Geraniums, and pinch off the dead flowers right before they die to get more flowers...

Geraniums like to be treated a little harshly.... They thrive on discipline.

You know it's been rainin' here since you left. I reckon maybe the Lord is just havin' a hard time gettin' yer stink washed off...

That said. Did you know you're still signed in the chat room? At least that's what it says.
