The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Heh... I am in Washington

I would say the baby is actually black more than blue, so it must just be the way the picture looks... The parents are brown sparrow type birds that I should know the name of because they are everywhere...

Let me search for them online and I will post a pic if I see one that looks like the parent.

Are those wing feathers coming in? - They aren't mature yet, but I wondered if that is what mature feathers look like when they start to grow.

I hope you're pickin' me up a steak for tonight.

Sorry. But I am making shrimp scampi for lunch tomorrow. Who wants to come over for some?

That's what they are...wing feathers! Roy's looks like little barbs sticking out all over her...looks silly!

I would think these baby birds are about a week old.

I got some more socks at walmart yesterday (on sale), along with some more Tang and some Little Debbie crispy rice snack bars. I'll send them off tomorrow.

Well, I was hoping for a website that would lead me to a picture that identifies them but no luck.... I don't know a wren from a sparrow from a nuthatch.

I can safely say it is not a chicken.

Best I could do if it makes a difference what kind it is (and I am not sure it matters to anyone!) I could try to get a pick of the parents tomorrow.

You've done a lot of work on that land! It looks great!

I went fishing today and burned myself up and got only two nibbles.

Sigh...

Lot of times juveniles look totally different then parents. The only kind of bird I know that nests on the ground is kildere. The book shows you have them in Washington. Are the parents brown on top and white underneath, dark bands around their necks? If so they won't eat your seed. They eat bugs. They will also decoy you away from the nest, act like they have a broken wing. Neat birds.

Yes, I saw that! Amazed me too that they are still filming.

I have had an incredibly busy weekend...we've worked in the garden and worked on the coop and basically just stayed outside all day.

I'm worn out from fishing in the sun and I have to get up early to take the boys to Vacation Bible School. I'm trying to get their clothes dry before I go to bed!

No, but I am going to look into them this week. The chicks went outside today, into the water trough. 30 chicks in warmer weather start smelling faster then 15 in winter:). I figure with 30 they will stay warm enough.

By the way, my parents are up in your neck of the woods this week. They're visiting some friends in Sequim.

Oh yeah, I think they'll do fine! I still have mine in the box out on the enclosed porch with the light way up high...but Roy can already jump onto the roost we put in the coop. They seem to like it, and we don't even have the chicken wire on it yet!

They amble around in the yard whenever we are out there, but they never get too far away from us!

I have those in my pasture (didn't know their name either so I looked them up) and they are always talking and jumping in front of me like they are leading me somewhere. I hope they aren't nesting in the pasture proper or the mower guy is gonna get their nest next. Hopefully they are nesting in the more undisturbed grasses outside the pasture.

Those are cool birds... but no, these are smaller very plain brown birds. Look more like this one, and maybe not this fancy.

I once got left behind by the band bus in Sequim! They came back ten minutes later, but it was a stressful 10 min! ;~D

At least you didn't oversleep and miss the biggest band festival of the year. As drum major. But that's another story for another time. ;-)
