Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We're still debating what to do tomorrow. Jr. and his best friend in the neighborhood are in similar situations (although the friend is in more danger of not making it out). There's a picnic for the 8th graders after they come back from the movie. We thought of not sending him until then, but apparently they've been told if they're late they can't come to the picnic.
Wife still plans on going to school in the a.m. to find out what is going on.
Ya know, Jr. wants to do the public high school thing, but I'm thinkin' Luke won't be headin' in the same direction.

LOL!
Things are so dead at work that we get to head home a couple hours early. Gonna do some shopping, then get some work done to make up for the lost hours here.

The land I'm clearin' is along the lane comin' to the house... it's old pasture that's just so overgrown you can't do anything, even walk thru it... the acreage away from the road is well established hardwoods, without all the "shite" growin' up underneath...
I'll put food plots and plant clover and grass... and maintain the fields of fire...
right on the money Osage... the trees will be range markers, and treestand locations...
good news about the birds Hair...

yuh nknow Osage... there ain't a single pine... not one on my place... a few cedars, but that's it...

lookin' forward to seein' the Emerald Isle m'self... and Scotland... one day...

Sad to say, but now that it's all over with were I to have to start over again with Myranda's high school, I'd move heaven and earth to try and homeschool her. It's been that bad. And I will admit to not having a kid who is great academically and I haven't been in the practice of blaming everybody else for problems..... but, they is problems in public school. And I can define IS.

I am worked out, I think my arms are dead.... I need rest to recover from my weekend!
To: g'nad
I need some coyotes.... I must have 50 bunnies in my pasture right now.... I think I started this spring with a pair! I have plenty for them to eat, but I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't spot a coyote or two in the dusk soon. They have to be quick, the pony runs them off.... Doesn't like dogs in her pasture.

Well, the current plan is that Jr. and his buddy don't go to school tomorrow. My wife will call in the a.m. and if they can come in late and still go to the picnic, she'll take them at noon. Otherwise they'll just stay home.
Jr. is taking this in stride. They're going to a multiplex theater so they've got their choice of what's playing. But it's the one he hates to go to (he's a theater snob). He doesn't really care that they're going and he's not.

So they are taking a bunch of kids, and turning them loose in a theater to go see whatever they want without parents there to keep them in line? Jeepers. Bad day to be at that theater! - I am not sure this is a great idea on the part of the school, even if Junior could go.
You know what would be funny, if he wanted to go and you felt he should, would be to excuse him from school and take him to the theater yourself! They can't exactly keep him from out of the theater, or keep him from sitting with his friends.... ;~D
To: Corin Stormhands
Give some more details. When was the criteria set on who would go and who wouldn't? Did he have a fair shot at meeting the criteria? If he didn't meet the criteria why should he go? Are you upset because he isn't going or because others are? IF you don't think kids should go to movies at school anyway, why the upset?

But I've got a meeting in the morning I can't get out of. And his buddy couldn't go (he's on video/movie restrictions because of his grades - worse than Jr...)
This is a PTA sponsored thing. But it really is a stupid idea. The wife is a PTA officer. I'll let her handle this...for now.
She's one of them passive-aggressive southern women. If'n she wants to, she can scratch yer eyes out and make you think you enjoyed it...

I think parents would be the better ones to determine how to reward or punish or better motivate Jr. than sticking him in a busy work waste of time day. What kind of dicipline do you suggest a school use?

IF you don't think kids should go to movies at school anyway, why the upset? The rest of the Hobbits here have followed my trials and tributions with Jr. for a while. So they're working with a little more background than you.
But, the deal is you have to have a 2.5 GPA to go. Jr. doesn't have that. He's barely making it out of 8th grade. We're just wanting to put middle school behind us. There's a lot of crap that happened this year.
What disturbs me is the concept that "the 'stupid' kids don't get to go to the movies." It will be obvious who doesn't go. And all the kids know why.

And thinking on this. If they're just letting the kids out to watch what they want..... I know this is old-fashioned... but..... what about ratings? I don't know about the Stormhands family but I suspect they're similar to this family in that not EVERY movie was appropriate upon 8th grade graduation.
only the ones with lots of violence were appropriate at that age - teach her to fight off boys.
