The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, not to worry. See to your guests. If I remember correctly g'nad homebrews. We will get at least some suggestions stirred up here.

Yes, I don't know if he'd want to do it or not. But, you've been military - right? That would be a desired thing for him to learn? or was that just on MASH and in my college classes?

Well...I'm probably not the best person to ask. I think the penelties for breaking the rules were pretty severe.

On the other hand, I'm one of those people who, when we were kids, would follow the rest around saying "We're gonna get in trouble!" and didn't enjoy mischief at ALL. So...living on the edge just isn't my style!

What do you think? You and I could walk everyone through the customs forms...they are burdensome (in large numbers) but not hard.

Wonder if Tang works as fruit juice for that?

Hmmmm, I dunno. Does it have real sugar in it? Half of sucrose is a fructose molecule. So...the yeasties should go for it. I wouldn't volunteer to test it out, m'self, though.

Here's an interesting website: Tastybrew.com

Huh-uh! No clover, neither. (That was the smoking plant of choice around here, or so I recall!)

I wanted to share this poster I have, and see if any of you have ever seen work by this artist.

I love the poster, and it is very old and weathered, has never been framed, yet I still might frame it someday. I always thought it was very Tolkienesque, but it is not Tolkien... the little troll guys have tails!

Closeups:

At the bottom of the print it says:

"Netdragning, Fishing" av Rolf Lidberg
Printed in Sweden, 1974

A Google search for the artist shows that he has written or at least illustrated many children's books in Sweden and Norway, but I haven't found a good website yet that shows other posters of his trolls.

Weedwacking is hard work! the vibration kills my carpul tunnel wrist, so I wear my brace, but my arms still go numb.

I think they are pretty straightforward. I don't think it would be too difficult. The first time I picked one up at a post office it was before I moved up here so it was a small post office like you said you go to. The lady there gave me 2 and filled out a practice one so I'd know what I was doing in the future. Very helpful. Matter of fact, all the postal service personnel have been - except the lady yesterday. (reckon she didn't like me being barefoot?)

Numb...and weak. At least this one doesn't vibrate as much as most. It's just heavy. Not even really that heavy, but I haven't been doing ANY lifting or carrying, except for my instruments...so I'm a wimp!

Be careful with your wrist! Don't want you to be unable to write to us!

Clover huh? We ate clover leaves. But only the ones with little yellow flowers. They taste like lemon drops. And are really nice sprinkled in a salad. But, they cause extreme flatulence.

I don't have wrist pain as long as I always wear my brace to type or do some kinds of labor.... But I will probably eventually have to have something done to it.

Mine is gas-powered, and it vibrates *alot* more than the electric ones, you are right.

Very cool Hair. I have seen things of that style. But, not paid that much attention. You are right about being Tolkienesque though.

This was white clover, I think. We have TONS of it - that and the purple kind, which is our state flower.

The flowers of the purple ones are pretty tasty, at least the petals. We used to eat those. Never made it as far as a salad, though.

Oh...note to self...do NOT serve yellow clover leaves to dwarves...

So, did the ones you ate taste lemony?

We put them in salad because when I taught outdoor survival at a 3rd year level the kids had to scrounge food for one meal. It was always in the spring and clover was always plentiful. Therefore, often it made a large part of the salad because the kids didn't want to search too hard for other edible things. I like it sprinkled though. And I would find catbriar, dandelions, wild onion and nopales to go with it. It made a passable meal. I'd also make soup out of the wild onions and any tubers I happened to find. Usually panfried some nopal for dessert.

Look at this pic. I found it while searching for that Gimli photo. I had not seen this before but forgive me if it's already been posted. I just liked it and hadn't seen it.

I really like my weedwhacker! I'd enjoy it more if I were stronger, but it's not very loud, it doesn't vibrate, and no cord! About half the neighborhood has stopped by to take a gander at it, new-fangled cordless gadget that it is!

Wouldn't be good for a big job, though.
