The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You can't have sugar and flour on Atkins either. Salt is okay though.

EEEK!

I know you meant just the girl said it, sorry, didn't mean to imply otherwise. Probably differing opinions in Australia anyway.

We went there for the wedding, loved the country and the people.

That part about laying around drinking moonshine sounds pretty OK ;-)

My sister tried it with Equal and said it was not even close to tasting the same!

You have to adjust to the sugar substitutes. But once you do they'll seem normal.

I grew up drinking good ol' southern ice tea (1 part water, 1 part tea, 847 parts sugar) and regular soft drinks (both probably a lot of my problem).

It took me a while to adjust to diet soda (still not the best for you) and tea with Sweet&Low. When we first got married I was drinking ice tea without sweetener. Sweet&Low was the compromise with the Mrs. Her mom's ice tea has so much sugar it's almost syrup-y.

Now I can't stand regular soda or "sweet tea."

The problem is I like starchy ones too!

Same here. I looooove mashed potatoes. Luckily, I've been going without them for years now, because they are a pain to make for just a single serving.

Well, in the interest of science, keep on.

My boss has been sugar-free for a while now. Has some Equal in his coffee and that's about it for sweets in his diet.

He can look at a box of donuts or chocolate or pie and completely shrug it off without a twinge or craving. That is amazing to me!

You're right. It does depend on the person. After induction, I had to stop drinking diet coke... too sweet and it made my head spin.

My friend is on Atkins. She can eat sugar alchol every day. I cannot. It stops my weight loss, so I only eat it occasionally.

Every sugar substitute I've ever tried (Splenda included) has an aftertaste. I guess maybe I've never given 'em enough of a chance, but...

Nothing wrong with salt, but I use a lite salt. I mean, you can't eat it by the teaspoon, but you can use it to spice up your food.

I couldn't drink coffee without both, I'm afraid. Well, maybe without creamer but not without the sugar. It would stick in my throat for sure!

cafe con leche is great stuff! 'Course I can't drink coffee at all, so no worry.

I actually know a few people who don't care for sweets or salty snacks. Not by means of any diet - just naturally. It's not fair!

Sweet tea is one of the things I stopped drinking about 3 years ago. After one glass, I'd be wired for the rest of the day. I felt edgy and umcomfortable too, so I had to stop.

I've cut down on my soft drinks too. I can go 2 or 3 days without a coke and not even miss it. I still drink too much cran-grape juice though.

Wonder if it has to do with whether or not they are raised on the stuff.

It probably depends on the individual, too.

I think it all depends on the individual. I remember Rush talking about how his weight loss was a combination of things he learned over the years. Atkins and the program I'm on (Michael Thurmond's Body-Sculpting Makeover - he needs a shorter name) are good for rapid weight loss for people who need significant weight loss.

But I think for those who just need to lose 10,20 even 30 lbs. it is better to modify the diet, exercise and water intake. The lbs. won't come off as quickly, but they'll stay off.

Drinking the 8-10 glasses of water is also key. Perhaps because the more time you spend in the bathroom the less time you have to spend staring into the fridge...

off to lunch...mmmmm...veggies, rice and grilled chicken...what a surprise...

Except to get to the bathroom at work, I have to walk right past that d@mn candy jar!
