Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I thought I could just eat a lot more protien, but apparently one has to actually read the book. Can I lose weight just reading the book?

But no refined sugar, no salt, no flour. That sounds more difficult than Atkins!!

No fruits? Well that will screw up my mosquito repellent experiment!

I can't live without chocolate, and haven't found a sugar substitute that tastes good. Plus, if I remember right, Atkins says no coffee.
So that does it for me. But I'm tryin' to actually eat real food, and cut back on sweets, which helps.

What veggies are OK? I think I remember my sister saying that potatoes, carrots and corn were no-nos.Yes, those veggies are rather starchy, and are discouraged. Green leafy vegetables (lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc.) offer the most nutruitional bang per carb, and are where you should get the majority of your carbs.
To: RosieCotton
Sorry, Dr. Atkins....I'm not giving up coffee. Antioxidants, doncha know!

You can't have sugar and flour on Atkins either. Salt is okay though.

It gets easier as your body gets used to going without sugar. Yep, once I've been on the diet successfully for a few days I lose the cravings for sugar. But if I go off the wagon, I'm like an alcoholic at happy hour.
To: RosieCotton
You can have coffee on Atkins. The caveat is that caffiene slows weight loss.

I chalk it up to sugar withdrawal. My mom saturated us with sugar growing up! We never missed a day without a few glasses of chocolate milk and in the mornings we have cafe con leche with 3 teaspoons of sugar in it.
I stay away from chocolate milk most of the time now, but taking the sugar out of cafe con leche is so difficult! My sister tried it with Equal and said it was not even close to tasting the same!

Once I got used to it, I was calmer than ever, not my natural state, I figure that was because sugar was out of my system.
Corin, I never paid too much attention to any fruit restrictions, ate plenty of it and still lost weight - not pineapple, apple or citrus, but lots of melon and strawberries, even grapes.
It's not like I've ever really been heavy, but I did need to lose 10 -15#.

The caveat is that caffiene slows weight loss.It probably depends on the individual, too. Even though the good Dr. said no caffeine, I still have my 1 Diet Dr Pepper per day. I just can't find the caffeine-free version anywhere.
To: RMDupree
I can give up sugar in coffee, but not milk/creamer.
