The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Miss Hair - you are just too too good to me as I come out of class this morning. Troublesome students dealt with by viewing this lovely image!!!

(Perhaps I should make this the wallpaper on my classroom computer.... sigh .... no.... can't do that. Too distracting.)

I'm game as long as you can tell me what I'm s'posed to be reading for that day/week...;-)

In other news, a co-worker saw TTT this weekend and said she and her friends were quite disturbed that the elves showed up at Helm's Deep. Didn't we sorta say the same thing except it was okay 'cause we got to see the elf scream like a woman when he(?) fell off the wall? Seriesly though we talked about that, but what did we say?

80% of respondents have voted for Elfbash!

The snow clinging to the trees under a pale grey sky... the cold steel waters mirror the blanketed heavens... a small oasis of pale blue in a sea of monochrome moving towards the sunrise.. the birds flying hard, beating fast into the West wind, as if they were fleeing the dawn... under a silent snowfall...

Wow. I like this a lot. Nobody around this place talks to me like that in the mornings.

well, I must say this is not a habit, but I felt moved by the beautiful sunrise... and a touch of melancholy...

I normally talk about blood, viscera, food, the virtues of a good axe and a tankard of ale... you know...dwarf stuff...

Sheesh! Where'd I put my manners. All this cooking Ruthy does for us and we haven't gotten her a cake. Will this one do in a pinch?

Nope, I haven't set a date. How many are participating in the Silmarrillion read on JameRetief's threads? That might conflict, where people don't have time to do both.

I am not reading Sil right now, because I haven't had time, and don't actually even own it, except the e-copy. But I think we could start TTT next week if everyone else is ready!

I do think TTT can be broken into sections, this group can handle discussion of more than one chapter at a time, sometimes better than just one chapter, because some of the themes span a few chapters... I think it worked a little better before to focus on related longer segments of the story, because some of the chapters alone are short.

For instance:

Book 3
Chapter 1 The Departure of Boromir (already discussed at length)
Chapter 2 The Riders of Rohan

Chapter 3 The Uruk-Hai
Chapter 4 Treebeard

Chapter 5 The White Rider
Chapter 6 The King of the Golden Hall
Chapter 7 Helm's Deep

Chapter 8 The Road to Isengard
Chapter 9 Flotsam and Jetsam
Chapter 10 The Voice of Saruman
Chapter 11 The Palantir

Book IV
Chapter 1 The Taming of Smeagol
Chapter 2 The Passage of the Marshes
Chapter 3 The Black Gate is Closed

Chapter 4 Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit
Chapter 5 The Window on the West
Chapter 6 The Forbidden Pool
Chapter 7 Journey to the Cross-roads

Chapter 8 The Stairs of Cirith Ungol
Chapter 9 Shelob's Lair
Chapter 10 The Choices of Master Samwise

I liked turning 30. I always looked like a teenager back then and I got a lot of enjoyment out of telling people "I'm THIRTY! Take me seriously!"

I love that. No one ever guesses how old I am. So, here's the confession. I'll be 45 in 2 months.... but most folks in this new place can't even believe I'm old enough to have a 17 year old kid at home. (and they usually don't have a clue that there's an older kid and 3 grandkids too.)

blood, viscera, food, the virtues of a good axe and a tankard of ale... you know...dwarf stuff...

All fine conversational items and very well balanced by today's poetry, I might add.

Oh heavens no 2JM... I saw your post but didn't have time to respond right then... it slipped my feeble mind...

I was going to say I don't think owls would have any trouble evicting any squirrels the decided to squat in the new digs...

How high did you hang it? I hope you get a family of owls in it this spring... One good thing about owls, the keep down the ferrel cat population...

We hung it about 12 feet up. Steve actually climbed up in the tree and lashed it to the trunk with a branch supporting it underneath.

I'm so glad you're not upset with me...I am always worried I'm going to put my foot in my mouth and just keep talking, not realizing it's there!

yuh gotta have skivvies in yer wall locker... it don't say nuthin' in the regs about wearin' 'em...

I didn't know that about Marines. I'll have to pass this on to my friend who's daughter is in there. I'll get a laugh out of that!

Martha prob'ly won't think it's so funny though.
