Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi, Corin. Glad that worked out OK, thought it might.
Man, it is getting to be something of an animal husbandry thread.

OK, so it's probably not REALLY a birthday present, but it's a very good thing!

That's pretty cool
Hey maybe chickens can be made into good pets. Just how many people have tried:)
There is a tecnique called "imprint training" with horses. It's when as soon as they hit the ground a person is there to touch them all over and make human smell the first thing they get use to other then momma. It makes them easier to train.
I think it works just about the same if you do that to one when you wean it. When they are being weaned if a person is there alot to comfort them they bond to people. If they have other babies around they bond to the babies.
Maybe it works the same with any species that normally live in herds or flocks, They NEED something or someone to attach too.
Maybe taking the chickens out of a flock and replacing it with humans makes them more of a pet. I know when Charle brought home 2 ducks from school once they didn't really seem to want much to do with us, then one got killed just a few days after we got them, so the other was still a baby. As soon as that one was gone the other actually came up on the porch looking for something to flock together with. He landed up being a great pet. His flock was us and our dog and our cat. No kidding the duck, dog and cat slept all cuddled up together on the porch, and he would sit in our laps and come when we called him. It will be interesting to watch if chickens do the same. I bet they do, you know after I thought about it from talking to you, I was thinking other species of birds are pretty smart, parrots etc. Why wouldn't chickens be, unless from too much inbreeding.
Sorry for the ramble, just been thinking about all this since I have been talking to you on this thread.
