The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What I'd like to know is why did no one complain about carpal tunnel syndrome using those manual typewriters?

Maybe they did but it was just us women and it was just complaining. Or maybe reaching away and hitting that dadgummed carriage return was enough to break the motion - for one hand anyway.

I use an ergonomic keyboard. It it a lot more comfortable for me.

I hate those ergonomic keyboards....and the wrist supports. They just get in the way.

I've been using the ergonomic since they first appeared. The only thing hard to get used to for me was that the "6" is on the wrong side. Now, I hate using a standard keyboard. And the one on that notebook that I got from work is horrible.

I like the ergonomic keyboards, though I don't have one at the moment. Very comfy...when I go back to a normal keyboard, I feel like my arms are forced into an unnatural angle - too tight against my sides.

With a regular keyboard, the keys are where I expect them to be.

Our stud horse Rocky is a brat when it comes to worming. When I finally get the stuff in his mouth, he won't swallow. He stands there all stiff and pouting until it's melting and running back out. I paste worm every month because the horses are kept in runs most of the time, and I dread worming him.. Last month I stuck it so far down his throat I'm surprised he didn't choke:), Zimectrin is easiest because the syringe is so small and the paste isn't so stiff. But all the other ones are almost too big for my hand to push the plunger and the paste seems stiffer to push out. I think he doesn't like his mouth messed with because he has some bad teeth from cribbing:), is the only thing I can figure out.

I had trouble with about two letters the first day I used an ergonomic keyboard, but only for a very brief time. Poked the middle section of the keyboard without hitting a key a couple of times until I got used to it...then I liked it.

But plenty of people never get used to 'em. Or like 'em. Very true.

I think you are right.... I think there are a lot of reasons why carpul tunnel is known now and perhaps was not then.

I have it... I have it bad in my right hand. - Partly from the mouse, and partly from the number pad when I was doing a lot of number-data entry. I wear a wrist brace *always* when at the computer, and use a gel-pad mousepad and also a big sock tube that supports my whle arm. And that has prevented most pain for 5 years now. It is still getting worse, I do find that I must wear the wrist brace for more and more activities to not have pain.

I think in the old type-writer days, there was more general movement and less rapid fire typing than today. I don't think secretaries of old sat and did nothing but keyboard all day, every day, the way we do now. They wrote notes by hand, ledger sheets in pencil, and they made coffee! - Lots of other things to break up the day.

I don't type non-stop for hours (or click the mouse non-stop) so I don't have carpel tunnel. Never did get used to those dad-gummed ergonomic thingies! The ergonomic thing that bothers me is if the monitor is too high....hurts my neck, it does.

I know you never go over there but you should check out The NES from about post 55,500 on to see the king of spammers at work. They were trying for 55,555. You won't feel bad after seeing that.

I am glad you don't have any carpul pain.... A lot of people who spend a lot of time at the keyboard do.

I don't stand a chance in those kind of games with a WebTV against computers, so I just watch:)
