The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What kind of dog is she? That can have alot to do with how well they come when called. I have a Jack Russell and when she gets on something it's hard to get her back till she wants to come back. I also have Blue Heelers and if they are chasing my horses it's hard to get them to stop, instinct. But I have a friend who has a Lab and he comes great, of course though, she took him to obedience training too. I worked alot with my JR when I first got her. From what I have read about that breed, she does exceptionally well coming as good as she does. I guess that shows what just a little training does.

Well I'm half done with the Hobbit, so I guess I will finish, especially since I'm starting to like Bilbo.

But next will be LOTR.

And according to the news, we only got a few inches. Unlike Broward County, which reportedly received over 10 inches of rain yesterday! YIKES!

Traffic was nasty this morning, that's for sure!

I had a Jack Russell once that was extremely obedient, but also very willful. He loved killing muscovy ducks, though, which was kind of useful.

Wonderful job as always 2J. I read in the newspaper you sent that they are finally getting their new store opening. So glad for them!

she has to be leashed if we're anywhere where ANYTHING might run out. And if we're out at Dad's where she is free to run, she comes when called about 40% of the time, I'd say. Brat[wurst].

I know about it, and I don't know how to advise you with a little one. Gidget was really easy to train compared to Logan.

Logan was pefectly willing to take a beating in order to do what he wanted. Hunting with him was a disaster the first year because he would take off and go join the dogs of some other hunter. Not join them in hunting! - No! - Sex!

I bought a remote training collar (shock) for him, and that changed both our lives... no more having to beat the dog once each morning before he would hunt, because I could keep him from ever getting to that point. I used it only to enforce the 'come' and 'down' commands on him, and to use those collars, you have to really know how and when to use them. He got it only if he did not come on the first command. To me, it is much more humane and pleasant for all concerned for me to not be hollering at him all the time.

Anyway, Gidget pulled one getaway on me at the beach house as a puppy, and after running her down and dragging her back, I used the shock collar on her only one day. Her light switch clicked on much faster than Logan's "AH! - She can reach me anywhere"!

To me who likes to be able to take them on rides or to the beach off leash, 100% off-leash control is vital to safety, to be always able to get them to come.... and 'down' if it isn't safe to come back, like if they are on the other side of a road. Logan and Gidget both were trained to hit the deck if I yelled 'down', no matter where they were, and stay there until I reached them. That is actually easier to train than come, but it is pretty hard to get 100% if the only training has been on-leash. Gidget would have been trainable without it... but not Logan. Gidget is far more interested in working for me first than he was.

Do you think it would be extraordinarily lazy for me to buy paper plates and cups and plastic silverware for the summer? - I just hate doing dishes and I am thinking about going disposable for awhile! Simplify my life!

I have tried that one. What happens is the ghost of my great-grandmother comes in and smacks me when I throw them out, so I end up washing and re-using them anyway. How are you doing? Any epiphanation happening yet?

Yes, the chaplain is getting his Tang. At least he doesn't have to shoot any relatives to get it!

My dog needs you to train him. Can I slap a UPS label on his butt and ship him out to you?

Oh wait, I could just send him with Jr....

It's a Depression mentality. My m-i-l has never met a margerine container she could part with.

Mine neither! I have my own skeletons in the closet though.... I can't throw away coffee cans. They are so useful! But I don't need this many.

Mack says the ones here are about as disfunctional as the ones on NES, so not much difference:)

Jr's French teacher just called to tell me he was failing French (like we already didn't know that?)

I said "No, No Madamoiselle. It ees zee French who have failed zee world..."

Okay, so I didn't really say that. But like I told my wife, it's a worthless language. He needs Spanish or Japanese/Chinese.
