The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

That's OK, I was away for a week anyway, without access to a computer. Now I have to leaf back through some pages, and try to see if I missed much.

Bilbo is easy to love and it's an adjustment to carry it over to Frodo (one of Bilbo's cousins) in Lord of the Rings, but really not too difficult! Frodo has a taste for adventure (at least before it becomes a reality) that Bilbo avoided (as most respectable Hobbits do). No worries though! Bilbo has his place in LOTR, as do other characters you grow to love in The Hobbit.

Gandalf's role is much larger in LOTR and you really get to see his power in a grander scale.

No one ever replaces Bilbo in a Tolkien's fan heart. He's the Hobbit who started it all! *grin*

Strawberries! Delicious!

Have fun g'nad.

I'm jealous of your weather though. It's a miserable day here in Miami.

Yeah, nice to see you too, you were away for a long time.

The new dwarfling is fine?

Mornin' g'nad.... just came back in from my morning walk, which is a new routine for me.... twice around the pasture. Still don't know how far that is 'cuz I cant figure out how to measure it. Gidget likes to go with, and she can now be loose because I don't let the horses out until I get back (attack pony chases dogs)... AND so far, I can verbally get her to "stand down" and not go after the bunnies. She quivers, but she doesn't go for it.

I walk fast and it is far enough for my legs to hurt a bit, but I didn't puke. Spose I am not pushin' myself enough eh?

Good:)

(BTW, you just told me he survives this adventure:),. gotcha)

Don't worry I figured he did, he had too, he's the main guy.

It rained all day, every day in Albemarle County, while I was there, has it been something like that here, Ruthy.

There sure is a lot of standing water on the ground.

Yeah - even in old children's tales, I don't think they killed the main character too often!

Yes, Bilbo and Gandalf are in LOTR. However, Bilbo does not figure as prominently in the story of LOTR as he does in The Hobbit.

I wish MY dog were that good...she has to be leashed if we're anywhere where ANYTHING might run out. And if we're out at Dad's where she is free to run, she comes when called about 40% of the time, I'd say. Brat[wurst].

I always advise everyone to read LOTR first, since it is so much more compelling and even so much more beautiful than "The Hobbit."

I don't feel like the chronology is too important here.

Many of the other characters and places you read about now will come up again in LoTR to one degree or another.... The events in the Hobbit are part of the history built into LoTR.
