The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hopefully 2J isn't showing any more homeschool mothers around the Hobbit Hole right now... ;-)

I don't think she would make that mistake again!

I shoe every 6 wks all year round. One, because I ride alot all year round, two where I ride is very very rocky. I just had new shoes put on him the Monday before the ride.

My old farrier (just started using a new one about a month ago) always complained that he never got to reset shoes on my horses because they were always wore out.

It burns us! It burns us!

It's out here too. And it's just confusing me. Depending on what the weather is doing by, say 5:30 p.m. Jr. will do one of the following:

1) Get ready for his baseball game at 8:00
2) The game will be cancelled and he'll go to "drumline" (for marching band next year) at 6:00
3) The game will be cancelled and he'll decided he'd rather go to youth group at 7:00 p.m.

This is complicated, of course, by the fact that the wife and I have to be at the church at 6:30 tonite 'cause we're leading worship for Bible study...

Ah... I am lucky then.... Bay's life is pretty lax now. I hardly ride at all in winter... trails are too muddy and just too many rainy days... I should, I know. It has been too hard to get Bay back up this year. Young horses can get away with long breaks, old horses have a harder time getting back up. I will have to try to keep him in work now. He is 21.

Yesterday, though, with my friend over to help watch, I think we have found that the source of Bay's stiffness and his stumbling when he first starts out, may be a bit of arthritis in his right shoulder. I don't know whether to be relieved or not that it isn't in his lower legs. I also don't yet know what to do about it.... at least my friend helped confirm that he is indeed short striding a little short on that side, and not always, but with an occasional head-bobbing trot step. At least I know it isn't paranoia on my part that he hasn't been right. I do know my horse. He does work out of it the more he goes, but he does start out stiff and I need to be particularly careful with him on trail starting out. When he fell last year, it was 50 feet after a 30 minute rest/lunch stop, and he was tired that day.

He is on an MSM/Chondroitin/Glucosimine combined Joint supplement, and has been all winter... do you have special expertise in these supplements and whether I could/should increase the amount he gets and or vary dosages on each by buying them individually?

I want to call the vet and find out what more [Bute?] I should do for him... He is a weekend trail horse. I could Bute him the day before and on ride days and probably not kill his stomach, but I want to find out more from my vet, like whether the anti-inflammatory shots directly into the joint would be a better way to go. They last for months I think without the digestive issues of orals.

Someone named Fiddlstix. I don't recall being chummie with this Freeper. He (?) asks that the text not be posted to a thread, so I'll post it anyway and just leave out the urls. Here is the text of his (?) FRmail:

Hi,

In case anyone wonders where I've been or what I've been up to, well, I've had a real mess on my hands since my parents passed away. Legal matters with their estate, you understand.

Be that as it may, It will all work out okay in the near future.

I still logon to FR everyday to read the threads. Especially from the "ping lists" I am on here. I very seldom reply these days. That should change in the foreseeable future.

I have some projects ongoing and I would like your opinion and comments.

Go to: http://www.------.net

It is a server I have put back online. All of the links except two are active now.

I am offering limited free web space to my fellow Freepers to augment their profile pages here at FR. I am also offering a free email address , should anyone want one.

I also have an IRC server up and running and will soon have it "linked" to the FR IRC servers via Freeper Neil E. Wright.

(His Profile Page is Here: http://www.freerepublic.com/~-------/ )

Thank you in advance for your time. (I know we Freepers are a busy lot)

God Bless

P.S. Please pass the message along to anyone else whom you may think will find it of interest. Please don't "post it to a thread" just yet. I am considering this message as a sort of "beta test of the server", for now. Thanks again for the time, consideration, and help.

It reads like a massmailing and I wonder if he's written some kind of bot to 'spam' the FR system. At least he's not peddling green bikinis.

I'm familiar with Fiddlstix as a FReeper, but I didn't get any SPAM in my FR inbox. Hmmmm....

Maybe the wrong "private reply" button was pressed in this case.

I'd reply back and ask if the message was meant for you.
