The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Exactly. Surely we're not to believe that the dwarves would have even considered leaving while evil was overtaking Middle-Earth?

In the Dwarves defense, how were they supposed to know what was going on at Helm's Deep? They don't have a psychic friend connection thing going on like Elrond and Galadriel apparently do!

Yeah, there is that, but did the Dwarves figure at all in the War of the Ring (I really don’t remember)?

Besides, they paid the price at Moria.

They paid the price for what, being too greedy? Besides, how long ago was that?

What's the difference between that or hiding out in the Iron Hills?

Let's do a compare and contrast thing.

At the Battle of Helms Deep, when called to "fall back", the Elves scamper and the one Dwarf battles them to stay fighting. Not to mention, who was the first to charge the Uruk-hai who breached the wall? Anyone?

When given gifts by Galadriel, the greedy Elf accepts an expensive bow whilst the humble Dwarf asks for one hair from her head.

When the Fellowship escapes Moria, the Elf stands alone with a lost look on his face while Gimli struggles against Boromir to return and rescue Gandalf. Future lack of spinal fortitude is shown when Legolas is asked what they say of Gandalf and he "hasn't the heart to tell them". Real nice - like you're the only one grieving, pal!

Harumph!

The Dwarves were there. They just got shafted once again by the show off Men and Elves.

They paid the price for what, being too greedy? Besides, how long ago was that?

Greedy? Weren't the Elves in cahoots with the Dwarves back then? If not, how do you explain the Elvish writing on the Gate? It was probably the Elves unquenchable desire for mithril leggings and muscle shirts that drove the Dwarves to keep digging!

What's the difference between that or hiding out in the Iron Hills?

Hiding or simply unaware?

Ok.

”The Last Alliance of ELVES and Men” – no mention or sight of Dwarves on the slopes of Mt. Doom.

After Bard offs Smaug and his town is destroyed, how is he repaid? He is repaid with the head of an axe.

13 big, brave Dwarves send 1 little Hobbit to get food for them from a trio of trolls.

Aformentioned Hobbit must rescue said Dwarves from a multitude of sticky situations.

Dwarves were commissioned to perform a job, and ended up trying to steal from their clients.

Seven burly Dwarves couldn’t manage to keep one petite Princess safe, while a mere workshop of Elves can keep the world’s children satisfied on Christmas morning.

My criticism, I hope you know, was for an owner who would have a stallion grow to 1200 pounds without training while anyone still had a chance... and then not finding him a place where he would at least have free access to exercise and a little intellectual stimulation in his days.

Minor elf-bash forgiven on a day full of grievous behavior!

Perhaps unlike the countless numbers of men and elves, only one dwarf was needed to ensure the success of the mission...quest...thing...

Alas, I am out of here.

I leave with a heavy heart, as I fear that those who were once friends have turned against us...sigh...

I gained respect for the Elves after their (where were the Dwarves again?) valiant last stand at Helm's Deep.

Which reminds me.....

that elf contingent wouldn't be...The Irregulars, would they?snicker, snicker, snicker.

LOL! I'm having so much fun, I hate to go! Alas! I must!

See everyone tomorrow. My home PC should be home tonight, but I have to check it before signing on and may not get a chance. I'm babysitting for my sister (it's her birthday) in exchange for babysitting on Monday for mine. :)

Look here, the Dwarves and Elves were once great allies:

The War of the Jewels came in the First Age of Sun and in it most of the Dwarves fought with the Elves against the servants of Morgoth. Of all Dwarves of that Age, greatest fame was won by King Azaghâl, the lord of Belegost. In the Battle of Unnumbered Tears only the Dwarves could withstand the blaze of Dragon-fire, for they were a race of smiths used to great heat, and on their heads they wore masks of steel that protected their faces from flames. Thus the Dwarves of Belegost could stop the advance of the Dragon-horde, and, though slain in the act King Azaghâl drove his sword in the belly of Glaurung, the Father of Dragons, and so Glaurung and his brood fled from the battle field.

There was a bit of a misunderstanding later on in their relationship:

Not all the deeds of Dwarves in that Age were praiseworthy. For, it is told, the Dwarves of Nogrod desired the Silmaril, and for it they murdered King Thingol and sacked the citadel of Menegroth. In turn the Dwarves were caught by the Laiquendi at the ford of Gelion and the Silmaril was taken from them, and those who escaped the ambush were attacked by Ents and utterly destroyed.

However, if Galadriel (who probably remembers the above) and Gimli can bury the “hatchet” (HA!) then why can’t you guys?

Well, I’m heading home, see you folks later.

All citations from here.

Aforementioned Hobbit and said Dwarves were conned by Gandalf into taking out Smaug so the dragon wouldn't threaten the Elves' preciousss Rivendell.

Woohooo!! Steve is taking the kids to a hockey game tonight! Yeah!! I'll have the whole house to myself.

I think I'll get the house nice and clean so I won't feel any guilt about just sitting!
