The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Have you hever seen an egg that was pale and not bright yellow?

I found this.

Pale yolks

Yolk color varies. It is almost completely dependent upon the feed the hen eats. Birds that have access to green plants or have yellow corn or alfalfa in their feed tend to produce dark yolks. Since commercial laying hens are confined, lighter and more uniformly colored yolks are being produced. Yolk color does not affect nutritive value or cooking characteristics. Egg yolks are a rich source of vitamin A regardless of color.

Hike the Grand Canyon? - Are you nuts?

At 22 it sounded like a good idea. And my best friend and I have talked about it for years. Since we've hit our 40s, we've started talking about a rafting trip instead.

I think a pale yolk is ok... bad ones are darker than normal, I think. And they would smell bad.

Of course, if you do get a touch of food poisoning, you may not feel any actual effects until tomorrow....

So I could do fine tonight, and still die tomorrow.

Actually, according to Corin, my pale yolk chicken just got a rich dinner.

Some lizards, like iguanas, are vegetarians; you can feed them lettuce and other plants.

We saw a lizard on the ledge outside our bedroom window one day last week. There must have been a lady lizard somewhere nearby, because the one we saw was "presenting"; that is, he was puffing up the pouch under his chin, and bobbing up and down. We didn't see the female, though; I think she was hiding in the bush under the window.

Nothing to worry about then!

Food poisoning usually doesn't kill anyway... just makes you real, real sick.

I always just thought it was what the chicken ate that determined the color of the yoke.

My neighbor always gives me fresh eggs from her dad's chickens...the yokes are so yellow that Steve's buttermilk pancakes have a yellow tint to them! Taste the same though.

I have done nothing but work in the garden all day! I'm slightly sunburned because of it, but the garden looks great. Steve mowed. The Jedis played in their little pool.

Hopefully we'll get our chickens tomorrow! I'm sure I'll post pictures.

Well, the end of the year banquet has come and gone...here are the obligatory pictures! :-)

This first one is of Matthew, the whole reason we were there, to celebrate the ending of the school year with him. He got a document that states that he has finished his 02-03 school year and I got to stand up and talk about what he's accomplished this last year. Then I presented him with his document. Each family got to do this with their home schooled children. There were right at 100 people there.

This second picture is of Joshua. The theme of this year's banquet was "Honoring the Armed Forces" and Joshua's Awanas teacher is in the Army. So I snapped this photo of Joshua sitting on his teacher's lap. I think Josh looks wretched in these pictures...he got hit really hard with the stomach virus, you know and this is his first time out in a few days and was just starting to eat again. He was still a bit dehydrated even yesterday.

Oh dear, he would only look wretched to a worried mom who is a nurse! - He looks pretty good, and pretty enthralled to be there to me!

Cool pics! And yes, I am looking forward to the chicken pics when you get them!

LOL...It is really strange how it goes...he will throw up for 24 hours and just look wasted (I guess to me) but then plump right back up in just a day or two, when he can hold things down. I'm sure it's just fluid gain, but it makes him look so thin!

Still, they played hard outside all day, played with toads, played in the pool, helped in the garden. They had a rosy tint to their skins (not too sunburned...just a glow) that I was happy to see. And Joshua actually laid down after lunch (at my suggestion) and took a 2 hour nap! That will help him get his strength up.

I don't want to go to bed, but I sure do need a BATH! I'm FILTHY! I dug and weeded and planted more tomatoes (this time with a bunny barrier). I'll be back, if anyone is still here...but I need to get cleaned up.

I hope you are not dead, but you won't be in the clear till 11;30:)

LOL. you know just because I have chickens don't make me an expert.. We don't even eat eggs around here:), Chickens are for eating ticks.

I do know that in fresh eggs the yolk is alot darker yellow, and thicker. Did your eggs come from the store or are they fresh?
