The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Cookies are gone now.... need something else.... oh, yes, the first recipe is still good.

Another photo. This one so you will see that the Imelda syndrome has passed on down a generation in the Neighbor family. LOL

Somewhere between 6-9 months. It's so cute. The first eggs they start to lay are so small. Those are called pullet eggs. Then after a while they get to be regular size. A while back I found an egg in a nest, I thought for sure the hen was dead. It was huge!!! I still have it in my fridge to show. It's about the size of a duck egg.

By the way if the chicken thing doesn't work out for you in terms of good pets, did you know that ducks do make good pets.

My son brought one home that they had hatched out at school. That duck was so cool. He followed the kids out to the bus stop every day and hung around with them till the bus came. Then he would come waddling back up the drive. He played with our cat, came when I called him, sat on my lap when we would sit out side.

I just don't know how good of pets chickens are, never heard anything about that.

I forgot to tell you guy: One of my sisters graduated from high school last night. My aunt and one of my cousins flew in for the trip and boy are their arms tired! BaDaBump!

Ahem, anyway, my cousin owns a video store and I asked her to send me the screener for The Two Towers when it comes in. She said she would. Now I just have to hope she remembers. ;^)

Question from a newbie too this thread: Have any of you guys who are the regulars here ever met in person, or will your trip to Entmoot (BTW, where is that) be the first?

Just curious. I hang out alot on the NES (any of you ever visit there besides ksen?, we're pretty nice people too:), and we have talked about getting together somewhere. I think it would be a hoot, but so far we have had trouble getting any of us together on the same date and place.

Well, since I'm here, I'll respond first.

Entmoot will be the weekend of January 9, 2004 in Melbourne Beach, Florida (who has the link to the castle?)

We have had several "mini-moots" and continue to do so. The most notable, and perhaps most successful, largely due to the participants was "Dwarf Moot" held just a few weeks ago at Quantico Marine Base. g'nad, whom you will meet, and I met at his home for an evening of car bombs, ripe meat off the bone and cookies. A good time was had by all.

We've had other mini-moots, in Florida, Texas and Minnesota. Hair hosted a multi-species Moot at her place.

Others are planned between now and January.

Hi, Hair! I'm poking around looking at the website of my favorite farm supply place...thinking about what I'll do if and when I upgrade my fence. Look at this page!

http://www.farm-way.com/farmway/wood.htm

Do they seem like reasonable prices? If I did do it, I think I'd go with the four foot stockade fence and cedar fence posts...could get the six foot posts and cut them down if need be. They even have gates!

Of course, I'm talking about next year most likely, but I can dream, can't I?

I think I'm going to go visit after work. They're open until eight today, and I want to check on discount shoes!

We have had some mini-moots.... the Washington state people here have both met me, I have gotten together several times with Penny1 (who hasn't been around much lately) and Scott from the Left Coast, who came over to visit me once!

The Texas, Florida and Minnesota groups had a mini-moots already where several met and had food and a movie viewing, and last month G'nad and Corin got together in DC (dwarves only).

So is there a discount shoe place near the castle? Just watching a shoe shopping expedition could be quite entertaining!

OOHH:), what does she have against ducks? I really think they would make a better pet. IMO, chickens are rather brainless. Especially when raised from an incubator. It is amazing the difference between chickens raised by a hen and the ones from incubators. But then since she is only getting 2 and will treat them as a pet, they may turn out like ducks do, I don't know.

The trick to making ducks into pets is only have one or two, and play with/handle them alot. Maybe that works with chickens too. I've never tried. My chickens are mainly for keeping the ticks down, second for thier eggs to give to my friends.

$19 for 8 foot sections of that stockade fence sure seems like a good price! They may run specials on it too.... - Might be good to leave the option open to consider the 6 foot tall sections for $23, for privacy if you wanted it.

Keep in mind you will want to set the posts 2 feet into the ground, tamped in well, for stability.... so add 2 feet to whatever above ground height you want. Posts can always be made shorter easier than made longer!
