Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

GLORIOUS GLORIOUS POST!!
I am a bit too distracted to address all of it at once, except to say that I too have cut and pasted parts of it to a friend for their appreciation. The only thing I would add is that I personally was not at all upset with the way the Ents were done, except that the story line was all too brief. I missed seeing Merry and Pippin drink the Entdraught, and was initially shocked by some of the dialogue and character changes in the hobbits, but in second and third viewing, am becoming more accepting of the way it highlights certain aspects. I STILL feel Merry and Pippin have been watered down. Merry has the brash, cocky and gaming personality Pippin should have, and Pippin has the feeling of being so utterly young he is also utterly clueless and unthinking. This was not the Pippin I had grown to love in the books. Boyd makes a wonderful Pippin, but the character written was much too...muffled. Can't think of a better word.
I THOUGHT FARAMIR WAS PERFECT! Yes, I remember the scene where he says 'I would not touch that thing...', but that decision can only be born of a thought and emotional process of conflict and temptation. I would expect the 'nice guy nobility' of Aragorn, because he has been bred to do it....he has had the company of Gandalf, Elrond, Arwen and Galadriel to guide him. Faramir had an embittered father who did not think as well of him as he did of Boromir, who's ambition was nearly the same as his father's. Faramir had no one upon whom to lean on for guidance. That fact alone makes his confrontation with the Ring noble. That Jackson chose to illustrate that for us through certain visuals does not cheapen or ignore the book character. In fact, it makes Faramir more real. A GOOD storyteller knows how to SHOW, not TELL. If Jackson had done it exactly the way it was doen in the books, I would not believe later on the admiration the men of Minas Tirith had for Faramir. Beregond had his reasons for standing up in defense of Faramir when his father tried to burn him. THAT's a dramatic moment I am looking forward to...
gotta go for now...

Aha. She likeses us elveses. That's precious.
So sorry. Couldn't resist.

It's a Shaw. Ooh...nice! Not that I know much about whistles, but those sure are purty! Sounds good, too!

Has there been any talk of when (or if??) they will do what they did to FOTR and tack on the trailer for the next movie at the end of the current movie in theaters? I'm dying to get a glimpse of Return of the King. I suppose it's too soon to find pictures out there somewhere too?

"So does that mean you are an elf-friend! - Welcome!"Well you *gotta* love the elves!
To: Dawntreader
Dawn, the last 4 times I saw the movie they had a preview of RoTK. It was short. Nothing much there. But, a few character shots that were not really describable and then the "coming December 2003." So, it ought to be soon I'm thinking.

I don't see how we can keep from loving the elves. My home is a haven for elf lovers!

And he quietly returns the Evenstar...
Man... What time is it? - I want to see that again! - NO! must wait for Penny on Saturday! - Why? - Can see it again with Penny! - It is too late! - starts in an hour! - Not too late! Could be there in 20 minutes! - Too late!

It's nickle/silver and one of those conical ones with a wooden block in the mouthpiece.......it's like a big Clarke. It's not as much trouble reaching all the holes as I thought it would be. I just have to hit the holes more consistently and get used to the breath requirements. By the time I learn to play this thing I'll really be wowing the nurses on the lung capacity test!

Congratulations on the new job! From what I've heard about college IT departments, they are usually fairly laid-back places to work. Hope you enjoy it! :)

I've only seen it twice! May go again sometime this weekend, I guess - we probably only have about two weeks left here. Last year they stopped showing FOTR by the second week of January, or about that. So far I think TTT may last until the week after next, but they'll probably stop then. Sigh!
To: Dawntreader
Welcome again, elf-friend, and tell Corin, OT, and the other elf-bashers to back off! Ha!
I have seen only a few pics that are possibly RoTK. Nothing of subtance. And nothing that could definitively be declared to be RoTK, and not just a deleted scene from TTT. Sometime soon I will be posting a RoTK spoiler thread that can collect the stuff we do find!
We had the other preview in March didn't we? - Hopefully there will be a theater preview. That would be wonderful.
To: HairOfTheDog
LOL that is what I was doing just over 2 hours ago.
"It starts at 7..it's 6:30. I could make it if I left now. Should I go? Oh but Saturday is the matinee price. I can make it until Saturday, right? Ooo 6:40. If I'm going, I have to go now. 6:45 this is it..point of no return! Ok, ok...I guess I can wait."
Of course I'll have to go through that all again tomorrow night. I don't know if I'll be able to resist the temptation then though.

And yeah, it does seem pretty laid back - and somewhat isolated from the rest of the college, too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sounds like for the most part the IT dept just does their own thing.

Man, Penny and I still found it in June! in that little weird theater!
And it was in normal theaters until April at least!

Some of you may remember that before I left for the holiday I mentioned that my daughter LOVED Haldir. So, with his emergence as Mr. Warrior Elf in TTT I couldn't wait for her to see the death scene. For those of you who occasionally get a good laugh out of teenage girl antics this was classic. We were at a drive-in so there was no worry about upsetting fellow viewers. I had not even told her that Haldir was in TTT.
When the elves marched into Helm's Deep with Haldir at the forefront it was "oh my gosh! oh my gosh! it's HIM! It's Haldir! I don't care if Jackson never sticks to the book story line he put Haldir in TTT!" Windows in pickup fogged up and I had to start the engine and turn on defroster.
Then, the death scene. Major denial. "NO, NO, NO, this can't be happening! He wasn't even there! NO NO this is criminal. OH No what a sick man! How could he do this to Haldir. It's not happening! It's not happening. It can't, he wasn't there!"
Well, I laughed out loud. Rude of me of course but I couldn't help myself. I was too entertained.

Welcome to the Hobbit Hole! Hope you like it here!
Don't let the chit-chat overwhelm you, there's a lot of it! But we do talk about the movies and books a lot too... occasionally we even break out into 200-post discussions of lembas and other associated LOTR trivia... :)
