Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, maybe not today. I've got a bit of hobbit in me when it comes to those types of adventures...
To: Corin Stormhands
Well, I freep from work. Right now I'm freeping from work on my vacation - they called me to come up here and meet with a prospective student. It's air conditioned here. It's hot at home. And I think after living without airconditioning most of my life I should not be turning the thing on in May. But, it's hot enough that I will stay up here just a git longer before I head back to the sauna.

lol! it's a vowel... to be placed on the end of a noun or adjective to signify indefinite... a book, a chair...

And the Mrs. just told me that, after lunch on Sunday, she would prefer that I take the boys to Kings Dominion...

To: Wneighbor

But, airconditioning in May? It's still spring!
Of course it also got up to 99 here yesterday.
Not a good outlook for August.
To: Wneighbor
Oh, sorry.
Kings Dominion is an amusement park. Owned by Paramount. Like
Kings Island, Carrowinds, etc.
Park wise we prefer Busch Gardens (which is also close) but we pick KD because KD has a water park right there in the park.
Side story: Virginia has what is commonly referred to as the "King's Dominion Law" which says public schools may not open until the Tuesday after Labor Day. Some counties have applied and received exemptions. But it was named the KD law becuse of their lobbying for it (along with the rest of the tourism industry).

Sheesh! Radio host is talking to a woman on a cell phone who is driving through the midst of the storm, not the tornado warning area, but still. She's telling him how bad the driving conditions are.
For Pete's sake woman! Put down the phone and drive!
To: Corin Stormhands
Well, I like that King's Dominion law! I wish we had one. We used to always start school the day after Labor day. This year Myranda had to go back on like August 7 or something. Besides the fact that I don't like it, can you imagine the bill for paying for that air conditioning here in Texas?!?!
To: Corin Stormhands
For Pete's sake woman! Put down the phone and drive! all i can say to that is
DITTO!
Smeagol must be off figuring out about how damnation works.

I am supposed to be learn vocabulary... but does this crazy book use the vocabulary of the lesson... no.... they are introducing words I don't know.
That's right... I don't know them because arabic is not my mother tongue.
Sometimes I get so frustrated.

But the problem is, up here we have to build in enough snow days that school doesn't get out until the middle of June. It's a trade-off.
We barely made it through this year without having to add days at the end of the year. We missed two days for the snipers and then a bunch of snow days.
What gets me is the years when we don't have snow days, and they have to give the kids the time off that they've built into the schedule. A few years back we missed no days for snow, so they gave them a five-day weekend for Memorial Day. Then they were supposed to come back for an additional two weeks and end "on time."
It was a stupid move. NOBODY accomplished anything after that break. The kids were already in summer mode.
Of course my county is also the county that scheduled Martin Luther King, Jr. day as a make-up day. Then, when they started getting heat, the School Board actually said (and I am not making this up) "Well, if it's an important day to you, you will not be counted as absent."
Over 40% of the kids didn't show that day.
To: carton253
Sometimes I get so frustrated. Oh, I've never done that!
there's still that hell thing for lying isn't there?
Oh, okay, that was one of those damnation lessons for you.
To: carton253; Wneighbor
That's right... I don't know them because arabic is not my mother tongue. No. No. No! You don't know them because you're a racist. See? That's why you're having trouble...

It will not surprise you that this doesn't surprise me will it?
They've done the same thing with MLK day here. I've not heard anybody complain yet. But, we've been in the backward parts of Texas you know.
