Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, here are our cattle dogs- though they are currently in GA. Sadie Mae is on the left and Cadillac Jack is on the right. Breeders come up with strange names sometimes.
To: Scott from the Left Coast
Gidget is aloof like that. She doesn't go out of her way to greet other dogs, so her snappiness at them is more over-defensiveness when they come on strong at her than aggression.

I rarely repeat Logan's registered name. I was almost too embarrassed to show him.
He came named and registered, because he had washed out of a field trial kennel. I was disappointed to find out that once registered, their names can't be changed.

Ooh, ooh, let me! There are a few I'm not sure about, though....off the top of my head, that is.
Quiz #15 Sam
1. Give Sams full name.
Samwise Gamgee
2. Sam followed in his fathers footsteps. What profession did they share?
Gardener
3. Where did Sam and his father, Ham Gamgee, live?
Number 3 Bagshot Row
4. How did Sam become involved in Frodos journey?
Ummm...eavesdropping?
5. Whom did Sam very much want to see?
Elves!
6. What did Sam call Gollum?
Stinker and Slinker
7. What did Sam decide to do when he thought that Frodo had been killed by Shelob?
Take the ring and finish the quest.
8. Why was Sam able to rescue Frodo single-handed from Cirith Ungol?
Not sure about that one...
9. Whom did Sam marry?
Me! ;-)
10. How many times did Sam become Mayor of the Shire after the War of the Ring?
Seven times.

The cats and I enjoy watching the dog shows on Animal Planet. We always point and laugh at the registered names. One small dog went by the call name "Izit" which is cute enough, but the registered name was "What Izit?". The cats got a nice chuckle out of it 'cause that's what they think about every dog. ;)

Did you notice my silence? *grin*

Well, I escaped the troll meeting with just a couple of flesh wounds...

Let me catch up now...

He's lucky no Dwarves are around today. I'n you ladies need some backup on that thread, ping me over there.
Otherwise, I don't have a dog in that fight...;-)
To: Corin Stormhands
Funny thing is.... I shouldn't either. Except it is a dog thread. Just not a fun one. And I can't help opining, even when my opine is quirky.

Put g'nad on your possible list. I'm assuming he's still not here 'cause they're waiting on their Internet connection. That or the baby is almost here. (possibly both).
But he told me at Dwarf-Moot that he'll make it if he possibly can.

Dalmatians are difficult because of their high energy and athleticism... We had to opportunity to adopt a pure-bred 4-year-old Dalmation a few years ago (Jr. was 5 or 6). We opted against it for that reason. We were also told that Dalmatians aren't good with children. But I've heard otherwise from Dalmatian owners.
To: Lil'freeper
Another nice snaig!
To: HairOfTheDog
Nothing we can't handle. And a fine group of hobbit wimmin you are!
I did go back and smack that other guy again.
While talking about dogs, what about Dobies? This is Wyn, Marl's dog, at her most alert guarding the cash box in Marl's RV at the dressage show. Always several thousand dollars in it, but nobody gets past Wyn.
Actually, she's very laid-back for a Dobie, and a real hound for affection. If she knows you, she'll come bouncing up to you (can bounce over 6 feet), then stand on your foot, and bump her head under your hand, her signal for you to start petting.
She has a "daytime bark" that lets Marl know there's someone there, and a truly fearsone "nighttime bark" that sounds like she's ready to rip your throat out, and tear you to pieces. And I think she would, too, if she thought Marl was in danger.
All in all, a real sweetie.
To: 300winmag
She's a beaut. Give her a nice scratchin' behind the ears from me, please.
To: 300winmag
I like Dobermans for their style. There is not a lot that says "Am I lean-sexy or WHAT?" like a male Doberman at *attention*. I think they are strong working dogs like any of the others in the category... perhaps a little bit sharper than most German Shepherds, but mostly with sound minds.
I make a distinction between the historically protection and guard dogs like Dobermans, Rottis and GSDs, and the pit-fighting dogs, because it is a distinctly different skill-set to be a reliable guardian and protector than it is to be a pit fighter. The complex task of being a guardian was carefully bred and raised to be stable when done right. The task of being a pit fighter didn't require mental stability, only survival instinct and muscle. The job of the pit bull is abuse and betrayal by man, not a close working relationship, and there are valuable subtleties between the type of mind that can work FOR man, and lesser set of working for yourself.
It is a distinction between the instinct of a dog to go for prey because he wants it, and a fine hunting dog that will go for prey because he wants ME to have it. Who he is hunting FOR makes the difference between an OK hunter and a great one. The working guard dogs have a similar fine point.
