The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

How was the workout, Corin?

I went last night after I finished watching Moulin Rouge. I really like going late at night. But it sux in the mornings. I can' hardly keep my eyes open.

I haven't jogged in years. My ankles and knees are already operating at a deficit, and with the extra weight I'd be in trouble. I do the treadmill or swim at the gym. Sometimes I do the bike, but I burn more calories on the treadmill.

None of my classes are hard if people listen to me when I lecture. I tell them all they need to know for every test or I tell them which parts of the book it is important to study. Half the final I'm giving now is open book. Because this topic requires that you be able to research some stuff too. It's 50% open book with the questions and 50% a drawing utilizing what I've taught. And the interesting part, I would already bet on the outcome. There are 8 students in class. Four of them pay attention and 4 daydream, sleep or whatever. So, even before I give the exam I would say, odds are 50% will do well and 50% will either fail or barely squeak by.

But then on the other hand, if that site got wiped out, maybe they would move here!

OH! Good point. Missed opportunity there.

What exactly do you teach? What kind of college?

Thank you... I have been dreading all the math classes that I am forced to take. If it were up to me, I wouldn't do any math...

Gee, I wish I was closer so I could help you. Math works for me. There is an answer and it's not some fluid what does this mean to you thing. (unless it's fluid mechanics)

I sure will! Thanks! He's worked hard and he has to give a presentation this evening...the last thing he has to do.

Then he's off for a few weeks, then he starts back up again, working on his thesis.

I'm at a community college technical campus teaching computer drafting and design. Pretty mundane. I'm just in one of those kind of niches where I teach it because I worked at it for so long I know it like the back of my hand. Get me into anything else and I'm lost.

That's the one thing I like about math... it's either the answer or not. There's not the subjection that goes with answering an essay question... and trying to guess exactly what the prof wants to hear.

Statistics always annoy me. Matthew has learned statistics this year and it was all I could do not to yell about how stupid it is.

If you have 4 oranges and 1 apple in paper bag...you have a 4 out of 5 chance of grabbing an orange when you reach in there.

My reasoning is "What difference does it make what the chances are if you happen to grab the apple?"

I know, I'm probably being illogical, but it just annoys me no end.

That sounds great...

When you are talking about your students, I know exactly what you are saying. In Comparative Politics, there are 30 students in the class. Approximately 20 show up to class. After the attendance sheet goes round (miss three classes and your grade is reduced one letter grade), the Prof will turn around and write something on the board, and the entire back row will get up and walk out. Last week, we started with 20 students and ended with about 10.

It also happens in math... at the break, people go home, or get up in the middle of class and walk out.

G'nad will have to teach him to run laps until he pukes.

I dunno. He promised that I would puke at dwarf-moot, but it never happened.

However, it's probably more difficult to fall asleep while running laps.

Don't you just love how you can have two kids who are so extremely different and yet so adorable?

Either I am not awake (true) or I'm projecting into what you said. I read:

I had a history professor in college who was absolutely brilliant. He was at the time (maybe still is?) a national historian for the Salvation Army.

He hated the attendance rules. So he wouldn't always take attendance. But when he did, he would take the list and randomly call out 3-4 names.

If all 3-4 were present, everyone was present. If one of the 3-4 was absent, everyone was absent.

That's perfect, but knowing some of my classmates, they wouldn't care if their absense caused the whole class to get a "F"...

All they care about is where the next party is going to be...

Hello everyone!

I just caught up with the thread, even though I am beating my head against the wall this morning trying to fgure out how to get my boss's passport from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico by tomorrow at noon! AAARRGGHH! I'll have to use UPS overnight, but they cannot guarantee what time it will be there, only that it will be there tomorrow. *sigh* Oh well!

Let's have breakfast. This Hobbit cannot think on an empty stomach!

I've fried up some T-bone steaks and eggs and have 6 platters of bacon and sausage links on the table already. I'm making extra and hiding it in case g'nad arrives and so Wneighbor will have some when she gets here! LOL! Hash browns, grits and home fries are steaming in the hot plate. I've got a few stacks of flapjacks on the griddle too, so help yourself. Coffee is brewed and juices are chilled. ENJOY!

2J - The check for Tang will go out today!

JenB - good luck with the doctor's appointment. Prayers are on the way for comfort and well being!

Hair - Harumph! Lookit that pony show off! Go BAY GO!

carton - Way to go chica! A+!! Congratulations!

WN - Extra hash browns and bacon are behind the casserole dish in the oven! Shhhhhh!

"If you have 4 oranges and 1 apple in paper bag...you have a 4 out of 5 chance of grabbing an orange when you reach in there."

Except when you reach in there, your hand will be able to feel the difference in texture between the apples and oranges, so you will be able to grab the one you prefer anyway, regardless of statistics.
