Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

but some of the rocks are real monsters! And one corner of the little patch we dug up is almost pure sand. This is great! Use the monster rocks to add some some interest to your border or place them where they look nice.
Some plants want sand. Use the sandy area for sand loving plants and the other area for other things. Someone probably added that sand for something they planted at some point in history. I mix a lot of sand with my lavender. Also, I think oregano, marjoram and the Mediterranean herbs prefer more sand. I can't recall exactly but I've got that info in books at home.

I put some around the mint, as it's planted in a different place. I'm still not sure how it's doing...the stems are green, but it hasn't put out any new foliage yet. Soon, hopefully.
But I'd still rather pick up my own rocks from on TOP of the ground! We have plenty of those already!
If you find out anything about which herbs like sand, let me know! I have oregano...maybe I'll put that in that corner.

okay, copy and paste all wrong. OT, reasons for not going to Kansas? too many windstorms?

I have one herb book with a section on what herbs like what condition, listed by condition. I will go home and look at that this afternoon.
you might want to send me a little reminder in a post afternoon so i don't forget. then when i get home it'll be on my comments page.

Good morning!
I had a sage plant that I didn't like where it was, so I got Steve to dig it up and stick about half of it in another place. Then I just hacked the top off of it and the thing is growing like crazy! Best thing I ever did for it, apparently.

I think I got my mint before you did. I just noticed the first signs of new growth this weekend. And, on average, it's 400 degrees warmer here...so you probably have some time...
