The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Even though I think that well brought up kids will resist the deluge of socialist philosophy that is dumped on them by academia, I still regard it as a real problem. I wonder if it is even curable, in spite of the fact that most of the academic leftists are paid, at least in part, with our tax dollars.

Now, for a really important topic. You are so right Sam. I can see that with my oldest child the values I taught her held fast and are in action now that she is older. And as an employee of a state college I have had to deal with a few of the socialist idiots. I was concerned about even accepting a position like this because of the majority of lunatic fringe philosophies in colleges. Fortunately I am on a technical campus with only 7 instructors and only 1 of us is politically stupid and even he has upstanding moral fiber. (we still argue a lot)

So, it ended up being that part of the reason I accepted this position is that it put one more of US in THEIR territory.

Our college has 3 other campuses though. And there are instructors that I just can't stand to hear start a sentence. I don't know what we do about that. I feel it is a HUGE problem because these people have too much influence on our future leaders. And there are too many of our future leaders who didn't get raised like kids of Hobbit Hole parents.

Hair, thanks for filling in the name and other info. I will put that on my partner's list too.

"behind every murder/suicide are two people that are impossible to get along with".

I love this. If I ever get into doing that kind of counseling again within a church I might have to post that on a wall in a counseling room. ROFL

Morning ALL:

SC: remember mine as well; that was a big day, although it happened 45 years ago; one of the photos tucked away in the family bible.

WN: the SNL opening was a hoot; both were right on the mark.

2JM: glad to do it. ;-) surprised to see you up that late, but it was late for me as well. Hope you guys had as beautiful a day as we did up here.

Hair: How's Bay doing? Hope he is back to normal, there's a lawn to be mowed, right?. :-)

OT: garden ne plus yesterday, spent a great morning oohh and aahh over the plants at a new nursery in town. Sooo, cannas, a cornflower (mountain blue) for one of the perrential areas, tomatoes, peppers, herb bed turned and ready for the basil and parsely. Columbines are coming out.
Next door neighbor put in 300 plus annuals in their beds. The strawberries under the chanticlare pear are really rolling. (naturally, they're volunteers) Finally reluctantly came in about dark. But today is another day that could be like yesterday. Hot diggity.

Well. I gotta throw on some jeans. It's time to leave for church. And I am still in my T-shirt I sleep in. Later.

I was brought up Episcopalian, which is very similar to Catholicism (the main difference, and the reason Henry VIII founded it, is that it doesn't recognize Papal authority) and has communion and bishops and all that, but fell in love with and married a Jewish girl I met in college. Now that was a seriesly long time ago.

I am not very religious, Wneighbor, at least not in a traditional sense, so I have just gone along with Jeanne's wishes and lived the Jewish life for the last 29 years, including bringing up the kids that way. Christianiy and Judaism are pretty similar in many ways anyhow.

Yeah, the congregational responses are usually different, though sometimes similar. I have noticed in a black baptist church there are quite a few "Amen's" whenever someone agrees with the pastor's point.

I'm going to check back for your posts on the subject.

Grrrr....it keeps raining here right before the weekends so I still have to turn the garden at The House. (this long distance veggie gardening is somewhat limiting.) Thought I'd try to start some squash here at My House although I'm not sure I have enough sunlight for them to do right. Oh well...at least I can watch the seeds come up.

Morning Osage. Supposed to get thunder here this afternoon. Mangos and guavas are ripening. Still in the dry season, but not for long, rains are due in 3 weeks.

Have you ever made an atlatl? I have been contemplating making one, and matching spears, for several years now, but haven't followed through. Ever since I read in the Wall Street Journal that a spear thrown properly with one can penetrate a car door. Too cool.

I have seen 2J on the threads pretty late sometimes, she definitely has a streak in her of whatever causes *unpredictability*.

I am down to 3 fish and one shrimp, want to get more, but not until I change the water. Maybe I'll buy a starfish and a couple sea urchins, too.
