I've just almost always had big dogs and this little dog is like a whole other species.

Well, I'm partial to small dogs cause I like for them to sit in my lap, or snuggle up to me. I wouldn't want a big old dog trompin around all the time. I don't like them TOO small though; I'd be afraid I'd step on it!

You would like Smeagol. She's at least a good part long haired dachshund (sp?) She's into cuddles. I want her at the foot of the bed if she has to be there. She wants to have all her hairy self up under my torso scooting me off the bed. It's better if she sleeps with Myranda. But, my big dogs all slept with me (except the dalmation who preferred the rug right beside my place on the bed.) Even when I had wolf hybrids the female slept with me. They never tried to scoot under my body peeling me off the bed like little dogs do.

Okay, I need some input. I didn't even know who exactly to send this to but I know at least I've seen a few of us here say they were Catholic. I can't remember who, couple of ya'll I KNOW aren't but you might remember who IS and point me to who to ask.

But, this thing I'm helping with the food for is a boy's first communion. I know it's some kind of big deal and it just dawned on me that perhaps I ought to take a gift. But, I haven't a clue. And if I'm to bring a gift what is appropriate? I don't even know how old this boy is, I have only met the lady's kids once. Who can help me?

I'm not Catholic, but my southernness tells me, when in doubt, take a gift.

Back later...

ditto.

I can't figure out what it should be though. I'm ignorant enough that I don't know whether the kid would be 6 or 16. That does not help. I have several "emergency" gift type things like devotional books, Bibles etc. But, they're appropriate to my protestant denomination so I hesitate .... Perhaps a quick trip to the Christian bookstore would nab a devo book for youth that is appropriate for a variety of ages???? what do you think?

Heh, take a look back at the message I referenced. ;)

Afraid neither of us are familiar with Catholic traditions... IIRC though, SuziQ is Catholic.

LOL! I just found it amusing that both you and 2JM had dogs named "Bear" at one time or another!

I may go over to the "FReeper Name" thread and explain my chosen nickname....

Usually the child's family will buy the 'First Communion' type gifts like a Missal, Rosary, etc. Nowadays, many folks will just give cash. It sounds crass, but the kids LOVE it because they can buy whatever they want. Or if you like, and can find a Catholic Bookstore, you could get him a Bible Stories book, or a book geared to children about living as Jesus would want him to live. If you don't have time for that, just get him a nice card and 5 or 10 dollars. He'll love you for it!

Frankly I've never been 'invited' to a First Communion. I have many nieces and nephews, but we haven't lived near home in 22 years! We didn't do parties for our 4 kids; took them out for treat like ice cream or something. Sometimes the parties get hugely overblown to the point where the child doesn't even think about the Sacrament anymore! I always thought a celebration with family and a few friends was just right, but our kids' friends usually had parties with their families, so it was always just us chickens which was fine with us.

Nope, from somewhere else entirely!

Gee, so did I! :)

I think I'm probably going to be the only non-family person there. This mom is a co-worker of mine (the cleaning lady at the school.) Her husband is in the air force and deployed somewhere. Her family is from south Texas, they are coming up tonight and in the morning. The husband's family is from Florida, those grandparent are coming tomorrow also. My friend has 3 children (I'm not even sure which one the communion is for since I've only met the kids once) So, with all this going on, husband off fighting, taking care of kids alone for the first time, and all this family coming in, I found her at the school a couple of weeks ago very down in the dumps and crying. I offered all the help I could possibly do. I've cooked a whole lot of stuff for their family this afternoon and will help decorate the room on base where the after celebration will be help tomorrow afternoon.

So, she gave me this handwritten invitation this week inviting me to the ceremony as well. She cried again and told me how much she appreciates the help and then said she wanted me to be there and be just like one of her family for the whole thing. This is a hispanic family and they speak Spanish when together. This blonde white woman is a little rusty on conversational Spanish but I expect to have a grand time tomorrow with all this.

and i said all that and still would like to know one important thing, is there a specified age when this communion happens? I'm trying to figure out which one of her kids this is. ha ha ha
