Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Juniperus Virginiana

A familiar sight, eh Corin?

Ahh.... well that Juniper is a tree!
I was thinking of the "little" juniper shrubs people plant in landscaping that become this:

The one I liked best was more tree-like than that...we used to have one something like the one in your picture when I was growing up, though - it never got anywhere NEAR that big, but it WAS of the kinda low growing, creeping kind.

Yep. Lots of those. I have a couple of trees in the back (along the neighbors new stream bed) that are in that family. I got them at a yard sale though (for $0.50 each), so I'm not sure if they're junipers or another kind of cypress.
To: HairOfTheDog
I just got rid of one of those in our front yard.
To: Corin Stormhands
I have found that a chain and a large truck is the best way to get rid of them :~D

Oh that's right...a diet! I forgot I was supposed to be on one! LOL
I really need to get moving if I want to lose some by June. :-P
To: HairOfTheDog
Got the chain. Don't got the truck.
The one I dug up wasn't that big. Last season I sawed off the branches down to the ground. Dug the roots up earlier this year and replaced it with an azalea.
To: RosieCotton
I have seen those big juniper shrubs pruned to look kinda like big bonsai trees, but I think you have to let them become like the picture above first and then prune them back to reveal the interesting trunks on them.

Maybe just stand out on the road with your chain next time and wait for a guy with one of those over-accessorized 4X4s to drive by. Those guys are always lookin' to yank something out to justify their big trucks.

I dunno. Somehow standin' out in the road lookin' for guys with big trucks doesn't sound like somethin' I really wanna be doin'....
To: HairOfTheDog
I think they do vary in size and shape too, though. Some of the ones I looked at had tags that said they would never be very tall, and some said they would grow to be four feet or more...lots of varieties, I guess!
To: HairOfTheDog
Those guys are always lookin' to yank something out to justify their big trucks.LOL! Yeah, I know quite a few guys like that.
We do have a lot of people around here who NEED big trucks, but there are plenty of guys who have them as huge toys, too. Nothing wrong with that!

I think this is the one I was looking at:

It's called Blue Star.

Matthew's doing school...working on the last of his 3rd grade math curriculum, woohoo!!
I've got another trip to the post office scheduled for this afternoon. Rick wanted me to bake some cookies for the ladies there, but I never got around to it. Think I'll do it today, before I go. They've been wonderful.

I like the way the lighter green looks against the darker green of my oregano. Remember I was telling you about how I like the colors of my wormwood and mint together? I took those digital photos and was going to find out how to email them to you or post them but never have done either. But, they're here... if somebody can tell me what to do I'd show you one.
To: RosieCotton
OH MY! I love that juniper! If you grow it we might have to figure out how for you to take a cutting for me in 2 or 3 years.
To: RosieCotton
I probably will at least get one. They're $13 a bush, though! That seems like a lot to me, but maybe not?I always calculate in the plant's size and how long it would take me to learn to make cuttings grow. If it's big enough then by this time next year you could be making your own baby plants.
