The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I have a plumbing problem too...trying to decide whether to attempt to fix it myself or whether to call someone. A much simpler problem, though...the drain thingie in my kitchen sink (the kinda bowl shaped piece where you put the plug and all that) is loose...so water runs under it and down the sides of the pipe. I THINK you can just buy a new one, but I don't know if I'd need special tools to do it or what...or if they're standard or what.

Maybe I can take part, at least for awhile. I've missed so many of 'em recently!

Is something going on that I don't know about? Awfully quiet this afternoon...

It's grim. I have had the water on now for a couple of hours and the water isn't under my cabinets yet, but it's seeping out of my slab. I can see it. It's going to cost at least $500 which is my deductable, but I also have to pay for the actual plumbing after they tear out the slab around the leak. My insurance pays for everything else, including any other repairs.

Oh well! I'll take lots of pictures and you can watch the progress. Maybe the leak will be in the middle of my kitchen concrete and I'll get new vinyl!! Or maybe in my hallway concrete and I'll get all new wall-to-wall carpet!

I noticed you guys used Bushmill's for the car bombs. I can't remember if that's the Catholic or the Protestant Irish whiskey, the other being Jameson.

I used to like Wild Turkey, but am not sure what about it now that I've seen it belongs to a French company.

g'nad bought all the ingredients. I was just a willing accomplice.

I'm here when I should be back out in the yard working. Came to check the mail, decided to fire off a letter to the editor about a resident @$$hole that wrote a nasty column about (U.S. Senator) George and Susan Allen on Sunday.

I'll post it if it prints.

OK...guess I'll just stop in and ask. Probably won't be there long anyway as I gotta do some spring cleaning.

Translation...I clean for fifteen minutes, run across a book / magazine I haven't read in awhile, and spend the rest of the evening reading. Did I mention I'm not a good housekeeper?

Oh, good on that letter, hope it prints.

I don't see the Richmond paper too much, but think the Times Dispatch may compare favorably to the "New York Times." It's alot better than the PRC paper, The "Daily Regress," for sure. Better than the "Miami Herald" (all the news that's politically correct) too.

It's a mystery to me why so many people wish to replace our freedom with a system that in the last century alone has been responsible for the death by execution of hundreds of millions. Although I have heard the reason be given that the left looks out for the "little guy."

FROM TORN:
Tolkien Home Sells For £700,000 -UPDATE-
4/16/03, 1:42 pm EST - Xoanon

Luke writes: I have just been listening to BBC radio 3 and I thought you might like to know that Professor Tolkien's house in Oxford has just been sold for £700,000. This might not sound like a fortune for a house in central Oxford but apparently (according to the newscaster) there is no kitchen or heating! There was a bit of a bidding war going on but they didn't mention who bought it.

UPDATE: Jon writes: The actual figure was more than £745,000 for the 7-bedded Georgian townhouse in Oxford, where Tolkien & his wife Edith lived in 1918. The Tolkien Society expressed an interest in buying the property but it proved too expensive. The house was bought by an unnamed man, who now plans to renovate it.

Ian McKellen Voices 'The Simpsons'
4/16/03, 1:40 pm EST - Xoanon

We've posted about Ian McKellen lending his voice on a new episode of the Simpsons over a month ago. But only now do we learn the unfortunate title (at least for me) of the episode, 'Regina Monologues'. Sigh...

"just been sold for £700,000. This might not sound like a fortune"

Sounds like a fortune to me. Tho I guess the new owner can sell tours of the place now and make alot of money. Perhaps the guides can dress as hobbits.

Cool title for Mckellan's cartoon episode. The guy's quite the weirdo.

Indeed.

No kitchen in Tolkien's house. cool. Guess he liked to grab a bite at the inn instead.

Yes, Tolkien definitely liked a beer or ale, just like his hobbits, and whisky too, sometimes. I think he referred to himself as an "old boozer" in a letter.

I have a feeling he may have taken meals at the University dining hall or something?
