The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I found out teaching isn't like industry.

I've had that conversation with the Mrs. She's in the classroom about 10 hours a week, but spending 50-60 hours on school work.

I have been known to grumble about this on occasion.

Just because I fell doesn't mean the whole place needs to go straight to heck!

Yes, yes, of course you're right. We must cast off this needless spamming and sneaking.

Ditto on this end. I am only supposed to be working 34 hours a week. But, I'm here more hours than that. And I take lots of stuff home to do (grading, lesson plans). I'm also on a 9 month contract. The pay cut I got from industry was about comensurate with those hours, however, I still work at least 40 hours a week AND I'm on call for various things all the 3 months I'm not getting paid for PLUS, they want me here for 4 hours a week in the summer - when I'm not technically getting paid for it.

I have a problem with some of these things. This summer I am teaching summer school which only pays for the classroom hours, no time for lesson plans or grading. And I still have that 4 hour/week period when I'm required to be here but get no pay for it.

I'm thinking summer after next I might have to be on vacation out of town the whole time just to prove my point and not be here.

Part of the problem for my wife is that, since she teaches in a home school academy, she's had to write her own curriculum. So this year she had to write the American lit program. Next year it's Ancient and British lit.

Then it cycles back. But in a couple of years, she's going to need to go to a full time teaching position anyway to get ready to pay for Jrs. college (we're not banking on any scholarships at this point).

I believe it's the Devil. I seriously do.

Just look at it as a faith-enhancing opportunity.

No bets. I'm sure you're bright enough to figure out that if the roots aren't going very deep, these trees can't get very big. Knowing what the rest of this landscale looks like in this area I'm just glad to have little trees - although, they are getting fewer and fewer. Guess I need to plant some more.

Yep. For me writing the lesson plans has been most time consuming. Even though I know how to do something --- explaining how to do it is........... tedious.

this could indicate that i should go back to working in the real world. where work is a creative process. and the pay is real.

Hi, gang...sorry I'm late! Thanks for breakfast, wneighbor! It was excellent!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, 2J. I'm sure it will all work out in the end...and you're right, sounds like you may be being tested. There's been a lot of that going around here, no? I'd say that's probably a GOOD sign!

Had a busy evening...community choir practice was cancelled because there was a fire in the local power substation, and half the town was without electricity. So I did a Wal-Mart trip with my brothers instead. It was BEAUTIFUL out there last night - stayed in the seventies until late! So Fiona got to go along for the ride, which she was delighted by. You'd think sitting in the car for forty five minutes or so would be boring, but she always seems to be happy with it - guess it's getting to see lots and lots of people and smell lots of new smells! She was tired when we got back, though...went to bed early.

MAN has it been windy! And it's cold again today - it was actually warmer first thing this morning than it is now. 34 degrees out there at the moment, and snow is due this evening. Rats.

Wow Rosie! This is weird. We had a cool front come through yesterday... rain, thunderstorms, high winds, hail etc. It was cold here last night. And you were in the 70's!!! Thats a switch.

It's more like parenting. Sometimes there's just stuff you gotta get done for these kids and the hours I'm supposed to work don't jive with the needs of the job.

Among the many reasons I left the classroom for 'industry'.

We had a bad storm whip through last night...Oklahoma spring storms are really violent...it's nothing to have gusts up to 90mph. So I'm not surprised the tree split, only disappointed because it was a beautiful egg-shaped bradford pear that blooms all white in the spring. Gorgeous. Literally the prettiest tree in the neighborhood.

The plumbing situation is looking not so grim maybe? We think it might actually be the dishwasher. We don't know for sure, but I have the water on again and there is no dampness showing up. The water pressure is really low and the dishwasher won't work because of it so I can't check it. I don't know why the pressure is low... It still could be under the slab and it just takes time to surface. I'm keeping an eye out.

Oklahoma springs are violent, and then the tornados come! You know, it may rain alot here, but weather is rarely life-threatening!
