Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

or dig them up in the fall, and put them in a refrigerator for a few months, then replant in late winter (too much work). I almost bought some Gladiolas last week, until I read you have to dig them up.
What about tulips? Did someone say the other day you have to dig up tulips?
I just mowed the front yard, threw down some more grass seed to cover where we removed the lilac. Planted some Morning Glory and Garlic Chives (not together though). We'll see how they do.
To: Corin Stormhands
I know that you have to dig up gladiolas in the North, don't know if that is true everywhere. Spring bulbs require that the ground freezes, which it never does south of extreme North Florida. Most lillies do fine down here though.

2JM: sorry to hear of your troubles; have Steve check the connections and fittings to the water supply to the sink and the dishwasher, they are pesky critters that go when least expected, dishwasher especially. They usually have high pressure type hoses like a washing machine. Good luck in your quest.
To: Corin Stormhands
We have some Gladiolas that overwinter.
In warmer climes you have to dig up tulips and refrigerate them or they won't bloom the next year....they need a cold spell.

LCS & OT: howdy, stopped in for a look around. The hole has brief interludes of silence occasionally as the free folk of Middle Earth contemplate. Nothing wrong with that except by the time us "firewall enhanced at work" folk stop by to get caught up, the freeping time is about up.
Got 24 tonight-wohooo-what's Jack gonna do, what's the 'what's her name' goona do. Guess we'll find out soon.

Well, they are kicking me out of the library again, see you all later

Getting together for some kind of moot would be fun, agreed!
We haven't scheduled any time with Flat Frodo yet! Our schedule is mostly open, after May. We're probably going to be moving (or getting ready to move) the rest of April and in May, so best time for us is June and onward... whatever works best after that for everyone else is fine with us!
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
After May really works well for me too Bear. Myranda graduates and I'm kind of a little free-er for a spell.
To: 2Jedismom
wow. I'm really sorry to hear about your pipes 2J. I've said a big prayer for you. This sounds aweful.
To: Corin Stormhands
I used to have tulips and gladiolas that I didn't have to dig up. What's with that? I thought they were okay. But, that was when I was 200 miles further south and it might be that we were just mild.
To: Wneighbor
Hmmm, 4th of July Moot?
After May we should either be in a new place or out on the street...
Say, I got heckled by Libertarians today! Made me laugh!
To: Bear_in_RoseBear; My back yard
Heckled? Did you heckle back?
I think a 4th of July Moot sounds peachy! I was thinking of getting away from these slag heaps at that time.
Want me to get FF first and take it to ya'll or vice versa? (Maybe me, since you're the go between between us and MyBackYard unless she wants him first.)
To: Wneighbor; Bear_in_RoseBear; My back yard; ecurbh; SuzyQ
I just checked the Frodo page. Ecurb and suzyq have him late June in Boston. Perhaps we're after them. What do you think?
Do ya'll know when you will be finished with Frodo in New England? We don't want to snag him before he's been well toured by ya'll.

North to south or south to north (we're in the middle) makes sense to me!
OK, time for a little story... the job I'm working is in downtown Austin, on 6th street. The walk from my job to the lot I park in takes me past Austin's downtown Post Office branch. Of course, today it's packed with people trying to send off their taxes. So, of course, about 20 or so members of the Libertarian Party were on the streetcorner waving signs protesting taxes and drug laws.
Stupidly, I guess, I chose to walk past them rather than cross to the other side of the street. One of them sticks out a flyer at me and says, "Here you go!" I kept walking and said "No, thank you." As I walked away he started shouting, "Do you like paying taxes? Do you like living in a police state?" which is what made me laugh.
You see, I agree with a lot of the Libertarian Party's platform, but I disagree with enough of it that I'm not a member of the party. And that's what made me laugh... here I am, ready to agree with them, but their rude behavior is more likely to drive me away than convince me to join them!
Oh well, it was good for a laugh anyway.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
They'd get more members if they passed out joints instead of flyers...
To: Corin Stormhands
Heh, given the looks of the guy with the flyer, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had offered me a joint...
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Yeah - it's funny when people turn off even a fairly receptive audience!
My friend Bob (the one who looks like a Southern Sherrif) picks up his daughter every day at Catholic School (and he's Catholic too) and drives by these women carrying signs with pictures of fetuses and anti-abortion slogans. He said he had wondered for weeks why they were always there, fairly close to her school. He doesn't even realize there is a Planned Parenthood clinic on that corner (no signs) so he pulls over one day and just asks one of them "What are you doing here?" She just screeched at him for two minutes like he was attacking her position and whole purpose in life. He finally said. "Shut up lady, I just wondered why you were here" and drove off. Here is a really pro-life guy, and she completely turned him off with her attitude.

I know exactly what you mean about the rude behavior! And that's sad. One of my neighbors in the old place is a party member. But, he gets so obnoxious sometimes that I want to tell him to shove the party.
Then ya'll have got Alex Jones down there on TV telling you all about the state of the nation/world as well don't you?
To: HairOfTheDog
The amount of work they went to to make everything from scratch, yeah.... It was no ordinary movie! The CGI was impressive, and some of it pioneering. But the moive industry was heading in that direction anyway. I was more amazed at the "little things" they did, including the details of building the Shire down to the last detail.
I was especially impressed with work they did with forced perspective. Especially the ability to have a camera move by having part of the set move along with it, so the forced perspective is never lost. The little plates for Gandalf, and the big ones for Frodo, kept the illusion intact.
I was amazed with the "split-level" horse cart for Gandalf and Frodo. Who thinks up things like that, except someone who wants to make the best movie possible?
To: HairOfTheDog
Anger never convinces people, IMHO. Inconveniencing them doesn't, either! All those people trying to get into the Post Office during rush hour really didn't need a bunch of goofs waving signs to convince them that paying taxes is bad!
