Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

LOL!! Dino could have written that one!
He was a real scaredy pants. Thunderstorms, fireworks, vacuum cleaners, etc. We always knew when rain was coming just by the way Dino would start freaking out.

I keep all their collars, or did. I buried Logan's last one with him. He has many others that he wore throughout the years, I love to buy new collars. I have Gidget's too, the little tiny one she came home in. Perhaps another pup will wear it too.
I gave Logan's show collar away no to long ago, to my friend who is showing the collies... It is a gold chain a lady could wear, so fine and shiny. Logan didn't need that kind of glamour any more.
I miss Logan, the old fool. His other collars hangs on the wall with the ones that Zulu wore out and Gidget outgrew. I remember the times of their lives that they had when they wore them. I keep those things too.

I'm so glad I'm not strange by keeping things like collars. I love my pets. Even my cheesy betta fish (3 of them- Frankie, Dean and Sammy) that everyone laughs at. Let's see how I feel in a week and then I'm sure I'll be ready to have another pup lended to me. :)
I've got to take Becky to the orthopedic surgeon now. Her ankle is twisting out funny and since she had surgery when she was 9 months old for club feet, I want to be sure that nothing weird is going on. If she needs corrective surgery (Heaven forbid!) or needs to wear a brace, I'd rather her do it before she starts school in August.

Cool that you got the play area for Fiona set up already! - That's fast inspiration! Easy to build a fence for a little dog because the materials don't have to be strong, but harder when you have to block the tiniest of gaps!
have you talked to your dad again about the other pooch yet?

have you talked to your dad again about the other pooch yet?Oh! I was going to give you guys the latest on that and I forgot!
I talked to him last week, and he basically said he didn't think I'm responsible or organized enough for ONE dog, let alone two. Kind of a downer...he really doesn't think people who work should have pets, period, and perhaps he's right, at least to an extent. Fiona seems pretty happy to me, but I'm sure she'd be happier if I DIDN'T work. But that brings me to the latest news, which is that he said yesterday that after thinking it over, he's going to put off doing anything until fall...so Fritzi has a reprieve. I'm hoping that either he changes his mind entirely (since I think Fritzi is best off where he is, and that Dad would miss him more than he thinks...), OR that over the course of the summer, I can show him things like the play yard that will make him feel better about the possibility of my taking Fritz. So...we'll see.

Who would laugh at a Betta fish?
My brother had to wear braces for a time when he was little, I would have been an infant, so I don't remember.
But my Mom used to laugh about how he protested it. When she put them on him he would throw himself on the floor and act like he couldn't walk in them. She would leave and peek in on him, and see him getting around just fine, or playing in the yard. But if he saw her spying he would throw himself on the ground again. HA! I don't think that went on a long time!

HI all!!
thanks for the words of wisdom. Its what I figured : the "mommy factor." Whoever feeds etc gets the attention. But when Gizmo (that's what she's decided to call him) little dog sits with me, he growls at her any time he tries to pet her.
YOu think maybe if she fed him treats at bed time he would stick with her?

Oh Rosie.... I am sorry. Will we ever be good enough for our fathers? Maybe he would miss the dog, and it is good for the dog to be there, if he is loved after all!
I am surprised at how bonded my dad got to my kitty #6 who is still there (and old as the hills) I was not too sure how he felt about me moving into the beach house with all my pets, but when I left he told me that the cat was simply too old to move again. The cat spends a little time with me when I am there, but only on the way over to my Dad's lap.

She has to become his God of everything, a few treats probably wont do it alone... I would have her do as much as possible, and you should be more standoffish with the dog, for a bit.
Do not allow him to remain with you if he growls to warn her off. Don't comfort him, and don't pet him to soothe him... I might slap him, depending on the temperment of the dog, but I would definately yell and 'put him down' harshly off of you when he does it. He gets no comfort or reward for that, whether he is growling at her or a welcome visitor. I would let him know that his job is *not* to be a personal protector. He is little, but the behavior has the potential to become a real pain if it goes on, and will make it difficult to have people over.
Terriers are tough little dogs, and he is getting the wrong idea about the pack. The pack is all of you, not just you. She will probably always gravitate most to whoever is the leader, and the dog knows that your daughter is not the leader from instinct. But right now the dog is placing his own status between you and your daughter... she needs to move up in his pecking order, by providing for him, and move him down by perhaps her teaching him some obedience and walking with him.

Oh Rosie.... I am sorry. Will we ever be good enough for our fathers? Well...to a great extent, he's right. I'm NOT organized, and it's something I will probably always struggle with. Trouble is that I inherited Mom's housekeeping skills...and have the same sort of problems. Basically, I'm a frustrated perfectionist. I don't have enough willpower to actually BE a perfectionist, so that's not really what I mean. What I mean is that rather than just cleaning / organizing as I go, I want to do it all at once and get everything just so, and because I can't set aside enough time to clean and organize things alllll the way, I end up living in semi-chaos a lot of the time, which probably ISN'T a good environment for pets.
But what's frustrating is that even if I manage to get everything nice and keep it nice all summer, I will always be an unorganized nut in my Dad's eyes...he'll just assume I'm on an upswing for a time. ;-) He's probably right, but it's discouraging. I wish I could change the way I am, but it's slow work! I'm not good at slow work!

Dogs could care less if you are organized. That is why they are wonderful!
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful.
He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
