The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yes, you'll have to thin. OTOH you could look at local garden centers and such for herbs to transplant.

You're so good. My plants wish they had you. I only thin things when they try to take over something I don't want took over.

I'm usually very sensible about life and death situations. I think what makes Dino's passing so tough is the fact that he has always been around for me. I can sit here and remember carrying him around with Becky still in my belly, I remember when he became a dad and the joy of bringing Pudgy home and watching them play together. I remember his howls when Tequila (my original Basset) died in her sleep.

He was the king, the original and the one and only "dude" with his little furry tuxedo on. He put up with ridiculous antlers on his head and gay looking bandannas on his neck. He loved to play patty cake with his little feet and loved to be scratched in the little dent above his flat nose. He chased the towel after his baths and after catching it, would jump on top and want me to drag him around on it for a ride while he barked like a fool.

*sigh* I loved that silly old dog.

I am praying somebody to come into your office and hug you now.

You just did.

Ruthy, my condolences. It's never easy letting them go.

I read your later post, about all the good times you had together. Remember that no matter what, you'll always have those memories to hold on to. And maybe he and Logan are having a Hobbit Hole pet moot up there somewhere! I'd like to think so.

That's it! It's my dad's fault. He always thought "if a little is good, more is better!"

so, i'm not lazy after all.

Absolutely. I can still smile through my tears when I think of his weird habits.

Me too! They're all hanging out having a great time just waiting for their moms to join them someday.

Was the 12th your birthday Jen? Or were you saying you are seeing the sequel for your birthday when it comes out, meaning your birthday is in June?

oh, and we have adopted a Scottish terrier...he's a mix actually...but looks very much like a scotty...only thing is, he seems to have latched onto me...not that I dont want him, but I was hoping he woudl become Erin's 'pet.'

I frankly am not sure what to do. I have a grace period where I can give him back to the Rescue, but he is such a well behaved little dog, and so adorable, I would hate to give him up. Yet, he favors me far too much, which has disappointed Erin considerably. He is friendly with her, but even growls at her when he is with me when we are sitting.

Any advice as to what I can do? should I go ahead and give him back and take Erin to the SPCA so she can find a dog that will bond with her???

best regards,
Alkhin

Sorry Ruthy! Gosh!

I was just going to check in briefly to say that I would catch up later, but I am glad I saw your post.

Lend Me a Pup

I will lend to you for a while, a Pup, God said,
For you to love him while he lives and mourn for him when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three,
But will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and (should his stay be brief)
You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this pup to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again?

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness; we'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay.
But should you call him back much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.
If, by our love, we've managed, your wishes to achieve,
In memory of him we loved to help us while we grieve,
When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,
We'll have yet another Pup, and love him all his life.

-- Author unknown

O Dear... Lend me a pup indeed.

May your Dino rest in peace now! I did not know that you were dealing with a little one that was ailing too. I have had a lot of tears here this morning looking out where Logan lays and looking at Zulu here, and trying to come up with words that do justice to the love and grief and madness and laughs our dogs bring.

Sorry for your loss. I hope you find some space now to bring another pooch a lifetime with you.... We can live to see the lifetimes of many, from birth to goofy adolescence to maturity and to death.... living at double time, and never wasting any of it.

Silly Alkhin.... You don't have to 'get' a Flat Frodo!

Frodo comes to you, we are sending frodo around, one by one, to each of those in here that want to play!

This pooch, or any that you get, will bond with whoever provides for it... He will not "become Erin's pet" unless Erin feeds, walks, plays with and disciplines him.... The dog will be most bonded to whoever in the house is the provider of all the food guidance and affection.

How old is Erin? Is that feasible?

That poem was perfect, Hair. Thank you!

It's hard to explain why you are crying to folks that just don't get it. I'm lucky that my boss has an elderly dog he loves (he calls her "his Sandy") so he totally understands.

It's been a rough year for me and losing Dino just kills me. It's like a whole chunk of my life has disappeared. I am dreading going home and cleaning up his things. I'm sobbing here just thinking about washing out his bowls for the last time.

This is true. Also, I have found with Smeagol and Myranda, that even though Smeagol is technically Myranda's dog, I am liked better. And it really ticks Myranda off. Not so much that Smeagol likes me better but that I fry Smeagol an egg for breakfast on my days off and I never ever fry eggs for Myranda. She has to do her own.

oh dear. You're going to think I'm really twisted. I always get everyone a new bowl when they come to live with us.

I put plants in the bowls of former loved ones so I can remember them with something nice and alive.

okay, it's a little sick... but then..... i'm that way.

Not at all! I still have Pudgy's things in a tin (his collar, his favorite ball, etc). I just can't throw them away!

I love the planter idea. I will do that! Thanks!

Here is a funny dog poem I found when looking for the sad dog poem!

There's a monster in my closet

There's a monster in my closet.
He lives behind the door.
It's quiet and it's dark in there.
He doesn't even snore!

But my mama takes him out sometimes.
That's what really makes me shake!
She plugs his tail into the wall
and he roars like an earthquake.

He sucks down at the carpet
It's a frightful sight to see.
He goes at it so hungrily,
he might even suck up me!

That's when I run away and hide
but I still can hear him moan.
When a monster's running through your house
There's no place to be alone.

I'm shaking and I'm quaking
and I think that it's the end.
Then suddenly, a miracle!
All's quiet once again.

Now he's back inside the closet
and from beneath the bed I'll creep
and check behind the closet door
to make sure he's fast asleep.

I spy his name across his chest.
It's written there to see.
My monster's name is Hoover.
Please Hoover, don't eat me!
