Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Maybe I could put roses along the front fence eventually? I would love to have roses! I'm not sure which kinds work in the cold up here, but they sell 'em at the local garden stores, so I think SOME do. Roses! We can do that! Especially if you want old fashioned roses. Before some of them got hybridized into non-hardiness. Best way to find one that will work hardily in your yard without much maintenance is to go looking around at old cemetaries or churches through the spring and summer and find one blooming and over-running. When you find that you'll know that one is hardy. NO I'M NOT SUPPORTING STEALING IT!!! Then you're going to take a cutting (or a few cuttings) and root them. Not as hard as it sounds and we'll walk you through it. You'll take extra cuttings in case some don't work. And then if they all work you just have more roses or some to give away. :-)

Uh oh...looks like our good Dwarf needs his axe. He might need an elf to back him up. Never hurts.

Do you have any websites to recommend for rose varieties? I don't know much about them.
To: Corin Stormhands
Aren't you late for your moot? - Better get going now! - Might be traffic!

One moment please. I have to go look. One of my seed ordering companies used to have a wonderful selection. Gotta find which one.
To: ecurbh
Excellent! Let me give that a try.

Rosie, look at this website to see what I mean about the Old Roses. They are more likely to survive in difficult conditions. They aren't huge and beautiful like the florists but many hybrids don't have a lot of blooms, don't bloom often and don't have a strong fragrance. Old roses have smaller flowers, bloom a long time, smell great and stand up to cold, heat, poor soil or drought better.
I'm looking at more.

Gee Corin, I went over there to see if you needed backup. I don't like getting into wars with idiots though. But, it's Friday and I've got spare time. It seemed to me that you handled it all quite well with that trusty axe of yours. Something quick, powerful and sharper than any 2 edged sword.
Who is all on a diet right now? I need to find a diet buddy or something to hold me accountable. I need to lose some weight for my June trip to CA! :-P
