Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I just had a guy in my yard 15 min ago. Glanced out my window from my desk, to see a guy crawling over my front gate!

First time I have ever grabbed sidearm wondering if I was gonna shoot someone. He was walking across the yard. I swung the door open and said "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?". I stood there with my pistol in one hand and blocking the dog in with the other.

Well, turns out the guy was drunk off his ass. He fell flat on his face. Apologized to me for spilling his beer. I told him to "Get the Hell out". He went over and started climbing my wire fence and got all tangled in it... I said "God Dammit you are wrecking my fence" just slip through it. As soon as he was clear of the fence I let the dog out. Gidget raced over there and he wasn't sure she was gonna stop at the fence. She did, teeth bared. I no longer just wonder if she would bite someone. The guy kept going... from the sounds of the neighborhood dogs, he walked to the street on the other side of my woods and on down the road.

I went out to the barn and turned the fence on. I wish it had been on before.

I sortof wonder what I should do about the dog. If this guy would have been real trouble she would have been in the way. Or maybe not.... I just need to think it through. She is not a variable I have thought enough about.

When I was standing there with the door open and blocking her in, she was barking very seriously! That part is a good thing.

I am glad I was serious enough to grab the gun before anything else... and I am glad I was pretty calm. I knew for a fact whatever he was he wasn't gonna get me. I feel pretty good about that.

Oh yeah... it's a ten-wire electric fence... round the whole yard. - and out and around the pasture. I have a 20-mile charger on about 3 miles worth of fence. I have hit it before and *I wanted to sit down for a bit*! It left a mark! But I will often turn it off when the horses are in, just to cut down on electricity. The dogs don't go near it on or off.... horses either.

Anyway, I turned it back on tonight!

Yeah, good thinking to have been ready...I'd have probably been jumping out of my skin.

I always figure the dogs'll wake me before anyone can get inside, once someone's inside I worry about different family members getting shot or in the way. I ought to think the possibilities all the way through so I can be ready, I guess.

I never say "Jesus" like that around here, in deference to alot of us, but for once, it seemed like the only thing to say that was appropriate. Sorry, everyone.

Well, I cussed a bit in my post too. I used one other word talking to him that I can't use here.

I called Ramius when it was all over.... needed to talk a mile a minute for a minute!

I don't want my dogs to get hurt, but figure harrassing intruders is their main job. They just lie around, get petted and loved, and chase lizards the rest of the time.

And most dogs take that responsibility pretty seriously, along with adoring their masters.

Well, it's not really *all that*! I use it to keep the horses and dogs in... it just has a secondary value as a security feature. This guy wasn't afraid of the signs though.... most people won't touch it. But not drunks I guess... It has to be on to intimidate drunks.

Here's a shot of what the fence looks like, this is out in the paddock, but the same idea goes all the way around.... The guy was trying to climb it. That is how he got so tangled in it. The wire is pretty heavy gauge so it doesn't break, but it is kindof elastic, so it stretches... you can imagine how tangled a drunk could get in it!

Just to clarify the image as I read my own first post, though I had my gun in my hand when I opened the door, I did hide it behind the door... I was not obvious about it. Don't want anyone to think I was just swinging it around!
